APC 40 whining

Post by CerebralNektar » Thu Jun 25, 2009 2:07 pm

Hi all,
just wondering of other APC owners got the same problem :
when near all light are off (no clip in track for example) I got an audible irritating whine sound (high frequency, like power supply problem of early macbook pro)
It disappears gradually as I fill the track with clip and as pad lit-on one after one.

I wonder if Akai will replace my unit for a problem like this. A whiny sound from a MUSIC device is unacceptable.

PS : I have an european 220 v unit

It's sounds like a ground issue, your power is not properly grounded. Get a power conditioner.

90% of the times I have heard weird sounds from gear or a computer it is a ground issue.

Keep in mind that just because a plug looks grounded doesn't mean it necessarily is grounded. I don't know if that's the cause of the problem, but I do know you can't tell an outlet by its cover.

I have my APC plugged into the Furman PL-8C power conditioner and I have the same noise as when I had it plugged into a computer power strip..

So does mine! It's not that quiet to me though in my super silent acoustic room. The table it sits under muffles it a bit though, so it's bearable.

There's more whining to be expected from the European models since they're much more expensive

Is ground plugs are just supposed to protect human for electrical malfunction ? (instead of going into metal part extra electricity goes to earth)

they're supposed to but I was talking to a regulatory engineer a while back and he said the whole scheme is screwed up. it was a good idea to begin with but many manufacturers implement it incorrectly and UL (in the US, CE in the EU) can't really regulate or enforce it.

it helps in case of a catastrophic failure, as in someone throwing a toaster over into the bathtub while you're in it. but most often we're wearing rubber soled shoes and not touching anything with a strong connection to ground.

Could someone with a whining APC please conduct the following test:

1) Put your ear up to the faders of the APC

2) Put your ear up to the keyboard of your laptop

3) Tell us which one is louder...

n1

as far as the FCB goes, i get whining from that, but it depends on which bank i have selected and how the power cord is laid out and if something is touching it. No joke. I just kick it around a bit till it shuts up.

are you guys using FCB in the studio? what the heck for? I just have it in hear to program for the live show...

AFA the APC whiners.... Boo hoo. Sell it to MEEEEEEEEE!!!

(but it does suck to have that. maybe once live is stable enough it'll go away.)

APC sure does sound like a lot of trouble...

people must have the APC - whining that they want it sooner
people begin to get the APC - whining continues from those who don't have it
people see the price of APC - whining becomes territorial
people still don't have APC - still whining
people own APC - APC starts whining

8O

Conclusion: APC is a chick
