I'm trying to record a multi-track drum part using a (Best Service) Artist Drums Multi in Native Instruments Kontakt 1.53 hosted inside of Live 4.1. My hardware is a Mac G4 Powerbook running OS 10.3 with a 1 Gigahertz processor and 1.25 Gig of RAM. My audio interface is a MOTU 828 MKII. I control the set up with 2 Drum Kat midi controllers by Alternate Mode and a Radium 49 by M-Audio. I store and access my sample content on/from LaCie external hard drives.
The only internal routing configuration I've figured out in Live that will allow me to hear what I'm playing/recording is to arm 7 audio tracks (one for each" instrument" (part of the drum kit) in Kontakt and 8 midi tracks (one to host Kontakt and the other 7 for each of the separate midi channels for each of the 7 different instruments (parts of the drum kit) in Kontakt.
The only other track that I'm monitoring in my Live set is the rendered version of all of the other song parts to which I'm adding the drum tracks.
Apparently, this configuration is too much for my system. As soon as I start to play anything fast or complex, my audio starts to distort. I've tried upping the buffer size in Live to just before the point where the latency becomes noticeable (around 1000 to 1100 samples or 23 milliseconds), but it's still not enough to keep my system from choking.
Is there anything else I can try with my routing configuration that would allow me to half the active tracks by recording only audio or only midi -- thereby reducing the load on my system or is there anything else I should try with my hardware/software that will allow me to record multi-track drum parts without overloading my system? I'd love to run out and buy a Power Mac dual processor 2.5 G5, but I can't afford one at the moment.
This is an issue I need to figure out before I can move forward with completing the song I'm working on as well as starting the recording for a number of other songs. Please help if you can.
Thanks!
