Need a silencer for my uzi.

no really.. what compressors you all using?
Pretty happy with lives comp on the kick drum.
Looking for a nice comp for my bus channels.. give it some sexual touches.

for track by track work Live's compressor has proved great, no need for 3rd party here.....I also use it on a Return channel for parallel comp FX, works like a charm there too....

I only pick up 3rd party where necessary or unique, like for verb I use ArtsAcoustic (godly) and I use the Uhbik stuff a lot.

Sonalksis and URS are good native.

UAD rules card wise, am looking at picking up a PCI chassis so i can use my old UAD 1 and powercore cards that have been just sitting in a machine in my office. . .

Nebula comps are quite interesting. They're heavy on CPU though and introduce latency. Therefore they qualify for mixdown treatment only.

i've considered the sonalksis compressor (among their other plugins) a few times but meh... live's compressor has worked fine for me. I do need to find a decent limiter. Not really a fan of Live's Limiter. Been using Saturator for that, and you can only push it so far.

Considering maybe Ozone or the sonalksis master plugins... or maybe Elephant. i've read great things about it.

Then again, I also have Logic and it's plugins are a welcome addition for the mixdown stage... though I'm not a fan of its limiters either. And I'd seriously prefer to just be able to work within Live and not have to go back and forth.

I didn't realize you could get a hardware compressor that would plug into a slot in your PC (or maybe I'm interpreting your post wrong). I always pictured hardware compressors as this big piece of rack mount gear that I can't afford. I'm trying to google this but coming up with weird results... can you (or someone) else tell me more??? Maybe a model number... does this thing have a limiter too?

uad is not a compressor itself. It's basically a DSP accelerator/dongle that lets you run emulations of vintage eq's/compressors/etc.

I was doing so good... for months... even have a 100 dollar gift gard to guitar center and have been to the store and only bought bass strings (with a $25 g.c.). I thought my gear lust was vanquished for a time. I feel it returning.

Worth the money? (please say no)

Yep, I find Live's compressor decent on kick and snare, then I compress the bus with The Rocket or Sonalksis 315. Apparently 'The Glue' by Cytomic is very good too.

I'm thinking of getting a Duende mini though.. but I wanna see how V3 pans out first. I figure that if i'm gonna have to get a dongle, may as well get one with some DSP power

just a thought: I've read a lot of good things about the UAD precision limiter. Don't you like it?

also PSP's Xenon and Flux Pure Limiter II (quite expensive) are getting lots of recommendations

Sonalkis SV315mkII on the master buss, I can get this sounding (to my ears) as good as, if not better than, the SSL Master-G buss compressor as used on just about every record released in the 80s and 90s. It also works great on snare and guitars. Sonalksis plugins are made by ex Neve-AMS employees and sound very 'analog' compared to many other plugins, they also are 64 bit audio quality.

The SOnalksis uber compressor from the Creative suite is also seriously kick ass on drums, it does not do subtle like the SV315 can, but if you want to put your sound through a crusher, this baby does the job. I am a Sonalksis fanboy, if you don't already know

Oddly enough, I haven't liked the Stilwell plugins as much as others here. I think Major Tom is OK on the buss, it kind of does a dbx160 type compression. Fabfilter Pro C is a very good all rounder with a nice GUI. The UAD plugins are very nice, the LA2A sounds as close as dammit to an original teletronix hardware LA2A, the Neve 33609 is also nice, as is the 1176. The Fairchild can have it's moments and has a good vintage sound, if you like your drums squashed like The Beatles or Traffic.

Voxengo's Marquis is a really flexible and adaptable compressor too with some great presets that can be tweaked to taste. As a mastering compressor PSP Mastercomp is about as good as it gets.

The SSL Duende plugins are nice too if you can afford to splash 1500 on the DSP card or 1850 on the firewire box.

Live's compressor since v7 has been quite useable in many applications though. I use it quite a bit, even though I have some expensive 3rd party plugins.

IK Multimedia have two compressors in their 'Singles' range, including a Fairchild 670 emulation. which has been compared very favorably to the UAD version. The Opto-compressor is meant to be top-notch as well!

They're having a 2 for 1 Group buy right now at $99 a pop... if they reach 500/1000 sales you get to choose another 1/2 free on top of that.

(Just bought the Fairchild and got the Pultec EQ for free!)

Fabfilter Pro-C is worth demoing too!
