Another happy mac mini user here.......Rave wrote:UKRuss wrote:Ooooooo.I like that!
You got a white macbook haven't you? if that is the case then it is a piece of piss to replace the HD. Just as easy as changing the RAM.
BTW I hope you back up your external drive you dump to.
Even though I clone my macbook drive onto an external and boot from it to check it. I still have two mac puters. I would hate to lose my shit. Best safe then very sorry.
FYI you may want to consider a mac mini with 4GB ram
while I have a mbp, I find that I use the mini almost more, unless I am going off location

Re: AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH! MACBOOK DEAD?
I know your in the uk, but I put together a mac mini a 20 inch flat screen and 4 gigs of ram for about $825.00. Initially it was cost that led me to the mac mini to replace our aging "family" g4. I installed reason, dp, albino, and live and a few other goodies to be able to mess around while the kids are beating each other senseless and other bezerk activities that a 5 and 3 year old manifest......I found my self getting so much use out of the mini, that it kind of became my "main" computer. I also like the idea that every 2 years I can easily trade up without having to steal money from the college fund, or food, clothes etc....from the little ones. Really was just a cost issue that paid off.... I think the new mini's still use firewire also (mine is 18 months old).UKRuss wrote:

Rave, got meself a 320gig sata drive, turns out it's the same make 'seagate' as the one i took out. It sits in a little screw on sled, which was a bloody pain to take off the old one and fit to the new one, but once done, easy as pie. Cheap as chips as well really...
Damn, if I'd know how cheap it was I'd have bought a bigger HD years ago...I'm such a tech noob
Jek, I didn't see that...bad juju for you too!
My only saving grace is that I store nothing on the main HD that I miss or is important apart from a couple of tracks I was working on, but hey, since I doubt they're going to make me rich or famous...I'll just start again!
Did you lose much important stuff?

Re: AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH! MACBOOK DEAD?
Well, as I understand it now, 2.5" HD's fit any notebook, laptop type percuter. Then you just need to know it it's SATA or IDE. I learnt that Macbook requires SATA.
So I bought a 2.5" 320gig SATA HD 5400 8mb Cache, was like £69 or something.
sweet.

Re: AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH! MACBOOK DEAD?
To me, I guess and HD is and HD, but I'm sure more techy guys will tell you otherwise.
Re: AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH! MACBOOK DEAD?
Any brand'll do as long as the aforementioned specs are right. (2.5", SATA)
Re: AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH! MACBOOK DEAD?
Niiiice, nearly there. Reinstated from my last back-up, beginngin of April, got 99% of purchased music back, all my pics, address book etc.etc. all desk top files, most ableton 7 projects that were on the disk.Rave wrote:I've bought it already hehe.
How's the reinstall going?
I am tempted to start from scratch too.
Totally cool. Re-installed a few missing plugs and re-authorised, just installing Session Drums and EIC2 and i ma back to square oone.
With a lot more Gigs of HD space to spare!
Massive props to Anamexis, who switched me on to the idea of just buying a new HD! You are the MAN!

Re: AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH! MACBOOK DEAD?
BTW, do you guys use TIME MACHINE?
I've got an external HD, that I use as a second storage (live projects, mp3s, videos...),
is it possible to use it with timemachine, WITHOUT erasing its content?
do you use TimeMachine, or CarbonCopyCloner, or something else to backup your systems?
cheers
