recording from ableton into sound forge
Hello all
Apologies if this is the wrong section I am still new to this forum.
I am trying to play a set on ableton on my laptop and record it live on sound forge on the same laptop.
Basically I have both programmes running. Ableton playing and sound forge recording.
The problem is sound forge is not picking up the signal from ableton.
All other configurations seem to work fine, but when I try and directly record what i am doing in ableton to a soundforge file it doesn't register on the meters or pick up any sound?
Does anyone know how this should be set up.
Is there something obvious I am overlooking?
Any guidance would be very welcome as i would like to record sets I am doing on ableton but cant seem to get sound forge to pick up sound from ableton.
This is all being done on a single laptop.
I can record to external sources, just not on the laptop.
or is there possibly another way around this?
thanks
stevie

Re: recording from ableton into sound forge
why don't you just record into Live's arrange-view, then render as a wav or mp3 to use however you want? why do you want to record specifically to Soundforge? are you playing with Live as a demo and thus cannot record? if you insist on this way, maybe Soundflower(free) would help...
MacbookPro 2.33/ Live7/ APC-40/ BCR2000/ padKontrol/ Oxygen61/ Edirol FA-66/ KRK Rokit 5s with sub/ infinite possibility...

Skullnbones is on the money there! both options are the best way. good job.

Soundforge is windows only. Soundflower is mac only.
Skull's idea of rendering is still the simplest.

indeed, perhaps i didn't take that in to account. whoops and heres me thinking everyone has macs these days. I am ignorant and i apologise.

It's been awhile since i've used soundforge, but depending on your sound card's mixer, I think there's a way to "audition" things happening in the sound card and record that.
Or if you are VERY careful, you might be able to route your outs back into your ins... JUST MAKE SURE NOTHING IS AUDITIONING THE INS or else BADNESS will ensue.... yeah, actually forget I mentioned that idea.

Re: recording from ableton into sound forge
hi
thanks for the replys.
The reason i was trying to do it that way was when i am playing live i sometimes work with MCs using mics, external sequencer, effects.
these all route through an edirol external soundcard.
this means i have to open new channels within ableton set to record to capture the live elements of what io am doing as well as the bits i am merely dragging into ableton.
i was hoping to leave soundforge running remotely in the background capturing everything happening in ableton as well as the mics, effects, and whatever else i decide to do in a live scenario.
i do not have the time to mess about with setting channels up to record when i am in the middle of a set.
i guess i will somehow have to set the channels up before hand on ableton to record external sources as well as the live set i will be running.
would anyone know if it is possible to set up recording within ableton while also capturing external channels as part of that.
ideally it would be the music playing in ableton plus a channel capturing vocals via the edirol plus another channel capturing effects via the edirol simultaneously.
i guess it would have to be one channel capturing mic on the left and effects on the right or something like that?
that was one of the problems i was having and hence just wanted to leave soundforge running in the background capturing everything.
cheers

Re: recording from ableton into sound forge
do you use the session view only when playing live?
if so, just set up audio channels that capture the external sources and arm them. when you start the performance just hit record and all clips and changes inside live will get recorded to the arrangement view and you get new audio tracks with the external audio.
