both are really different but really cool in their own way.

It is my understanding, that you group instruments, you want to apply the same effects to, place in the same room and which are of a similar kind.
So your drums would be one group (or more: first group: kick drum, snare drum, hihats; second group: toms; third group: overheads; fourth group: room mics; all those grouped together to main drum group); percussion, I would set up as a separate group; vocals can be combined to several groups (lead vocals; ad libs; background) or guitars. Then you can apply all you favourite effects (compressors, eq, reverb) to the each group, which - on the one hand - gives it a coherent sound and on the other hand, also saves cpu power due to less effects needed.
I wouldn't group the bass with anything in the beginning, maybe later with guitars - but then, I am not a pro either
Okies instead of my writing some big crazy response I decided to make a little audio demo to demonstrate what I'm rambling about

here is a real quick drum beat i slapped together. There is no major processing on any of the drum elements except a touch of EQ here and there, and then a generic reverb to place the drum in. On the drum buss there is only the rough rider compressor. The first 4 bars start off with the plugin off, then the next 4 bars are with the compressor turned on. Trust me you will be able to hear here when the compressor is active

as and added bonus i have uploaded the session, in case you wanted to have a look at what i did. It was made with Live 8.4 and the rough rider compress in VST form, btw.

hey roach,

my answer was aimed at 'IntotheBlue', just some examples for grouping, since he said he never used this feature.

sorry, little misunderstanding there, I guess. I think, we are on the same page...

cheers,

no, definately AMS-Neve.

oops my bad. I always thought Eventide, but of course that's the Soundtoys ppl.

Mike@trackteam - that's another reasonfor getting an ilok.
And Altiverb and Melodyne

Come to think of it, most of my most used stuff is on that lil blue fella

again, I do lot's of work out, like busses, trains, parks, whatever...That dongle will drain the battery quicker than without. and its obnoxious, why are they so ridiculously big?
Most companies offer the challenge response or the dongle. Like audio ease- altiverb can be challenge response i believe, will get that one someday.

don't want to hijack this thread though...apologies...

IF you want really nice comps with lots of character, I think the UAD ones are the best. Their Fairchild is just uber-sweet ocne you take the time to learn it's bizarre interface. Even the basic CS-1 comp is nice sounding for a lot CPU compressor. I'm also a big fan of the SV-315 too, clean and simple when you want it to be, just a hint of character when you get heavy handed with it.

That said, I still use Live's comp 95% of the time, as it's just easier to fire that up and it sounds more than good enough for my purposes.

Given how awesome the Uhbik plug-ins sound, I'm really looking forward to see what u-He does with his upcoming dynamics bundle.

+1 on Live's compressors. As of L7, I didn't use any other compressor, except Elephant in the mastering phase. Now with the Multiband, I'm even happier - that tool is just outstanding!

IntotheBlue wrote:Also i use the impulse to play my single hit kick drum .wav files, but using that seems to alter the original .wav sample a little bit and takes out a lot of the punch (i've noticed toying with the decay knob helps fix that), do you guys use the drum rack or impulse for your kick samples?

Forget about impulse.. for some reason, it takes away part of the transient on a sample.
Use drumracks. awesome!

+1, even if it's a paid add-on, I'm all over it, the uhbiks make me moist.
