Ableton Live 8 with Vienna Ensemble 3

Post by Entelekhia » Mon Jul 06, 2009 3:23 pm

First post. Hiya people :)

Is anybody else using Live with Vienna Ensemble 3 and the Vienna Symphonic Library, or other systems that load many gigs of RAM? I'm a classical/electronic/film music composer, and just love using Live to create stuff. Very inspirational software. And I really like to write midi data and automation with it. Since video is also supported, I use it a lot in commercials and film music. It would help if video could be streamed through firewire to an external tv or monitor like for instance in DP.

There are a few problems though. Having more than 50 tracks is not as user-friendly as in Logic or Digital Performer. And crashes do occur, because Vienna Ensemble IS a buggy bastard.

I'd like to hear other similar user experiences. Haven't found many online.

i don't use vsl, but i'm currently diving into using some east west libraries, which are of the same philosophy (i.e. playback from gigantic sample pools). i also use several kontakt player libraries with good sized sample pools.

so when you say 50 tracks, are you giving every single instrument its own track? while not particularly time efficient, one of the best methods of working is to compose using section patches (i assume vsl has these?), only bumping up to separate instruments when its time to 'humanize' the individual instruments and render. it might be advantageous to build live racks of your individual instruments, so when it comes time to load them, all the fine tuning of the patches is already done and just needs to be loaded. also, live 8's group tracks really help with organization. whether grouping your orchestra sections (with a plug in instance per instrument), or by grouping all the midi tracks along with the associated vsti instance (that contains multiple instruments). i can get my arrangement view pretty streamlined with grouping.

I'm giving them their own midi track, and for instance I can have a Violin I Combi midi track, which has 16 different articulations. I have the entire symphonic cube level 2, so there are a LOT of articulations. Grouping tracks sure does help a lot for me too. But still it's a bit annoying to click them open and close again.
