I wonder how long until esafe blocks ableton.com...
Our corporate overlords have quietly instituted esafe. myspace, facebook, youtube are blocked. Streaming and other music services such as pandora, lala, last.fm, are blocked. As are all
webmail access points such as gmail and aol. My own personal website is even blocked.
Also interesting is that myway.com and 2600.com are blocked.
So far, I can still get to cakewalk, ableton, acidplanet. Also kvr-vst which not only
has vital info on software but their stream of contributed songs is really good.
I'm sure if I use that the network monitors will detect it and bring the hammer down.
I understand that it's their equipment and they can do what they want with it. But if this
is done in the guise of "network security" and "efficiency". I have to laugh.
When the job market favors the worker, companies take pains to make the workplace friendly
and casual. When the economy falters and unemployment rises, suddenly companies turn on
their employees and basically regard them as criminals who just haven't been caught yet.
Well, so be it. I hardly think my five minutes every day or so on ableton.com checking
the status of updates and such really cheats the company out of work.

That's fairly stupid, however, I sort of see their point as I bet millions of hours are wasted every day on websites that have nothing to do with the job you're supposed to be doing.
Surely bribing the IT dept may come up trumps and allow a few chosen sites through their net.

It's as if your employer is paying workers to do a job, and has getting so tired of employees using company time for personal junk that they've had to resort to additional measures to block out the distractions.
Re: I wonder how long until esafe blocks ableton.com...
Possibly. It certainly cured me of staying a little while longer each day to check my email and such.
Meanwhile I've found a way to set up a little streaming media server just for a handful of friends in the office.
Wasting time? Heck no, "professional development."

How self important we are to think that this site would even appear as a blip on major corporate blocking software.
Perhaps as you discover more sites blocked by your work, some you couldn't think of any possible reason why they would be blocked, you'll realize how little this site really matters in the big picture as your access continues.
Then go visit that thread about meds.

It's called giving you enough rope to hang yourself
As long as they like you and you get your work done then no one will say anything about your internet use. But if you upset them for any reason or they need to reduce headcount you can be sure those web logs will be used against you.

Ha, I think you're giving them too much credit.crumhorn wrote:It's called giving you enough rope to hang yourself

Except for executives with employment contracts (read "golden parachutes"), any other "at-will" employee can be terminated for any reason or for none. The other side of that coin of course is you can leave at any moment if you come up with a better gig.
So the question is: what are you willing to do or tolerate in order to retain good employees?
Re: I wonder how long until esafe blocks ableton.com...
this reminds me of when i used to work for Ditech... they sent out an email notice saying that anyone who passed around inappropriate emails around the office through the company network would be fired because it was happening way too much. that place was like one gigantic orgy. anyway, the first guy they fired happened to be the top producing loan originator for the preceding 6 months. goes to show you, companies aren't fucking around. this was about 10 years ago.
