How do you make YOUR Live set?

Post by Fradfresco » Tue Jun 30, 2009 7:31 pm

To perform live, what do you do? Just wondering how different people perform with their music....i have no experience actually performing live to anyone but myself (horribly failed) and i feel like i need a butt load of sounds and loops already that are all compatible with each other...
anyone want to share tips/tricks to preparing a live performance set?

There's two parts. Should get you thinking about things in the right direction if you are doing beat mashing / DJing.

There's another side to Live which is live looping, see Kid Beyond, but imagine any intrument(s) including midi synths as well:

And if you want your head to explode and be filled with envy, watch DJ Enferno do his thing:

(seriously when I need to be inspired i watch his stuff)

He describes his set up here:

It's not very technical description, but it'll give you a sense of how things are put together.

Anyway, the important thing is to play around with things and just have fun. No one goes from noob to master without lots of practice.

I basicaly mix my tunes down to 8 tracks and as many scenes as necessary, then assign as many of Live's functions as I can to my two MIDI controllers. Its basically Behringer BCR2000 for all the mixer functions (channel volume, mute, pan etc) and 1 or 2 effects per track. And Korg PadKontrol for Scene Up/Down/Launch, triggering specific samples, improvising drum patterns, and triggering various Send or Master Effects. My Send and Master effects include a beat masher, a cool delay/repeat, a filter sweeper, a vinyl-stop style effect, and an EQ3 with kills for hi mid and low.

So what I actually do is play versions of my own ("studio") songs and mess with them "DJ" style, muting different parts, applying effects in real time to each element (eg a filter delay on a trumpet part) or to the mix as a whole (eg a delay in the master track), and generally altering the sequence of the elements triggering different scenes. For extra chaos factor I can tweak the track's overall tempo and transposition (tuning).

The rest depends on practice, mood and imagination.

Does it make sense?

Check out this vid to see the whole thing in action.

When creating a live set in live, I take a DJ approach to how it should end. I don't want to be looking like I am studying for a test while performing, so I try to make my set as flexible as possible.

I start by compiling tracks and figuring out which ones to use. That's the hardest part for me believe it or not! I then take each individual track and try to standardize the sounds within each piece by bundling them into categories. I use 'D' for main drums, 'M' for the melodie(s), 'L' for lead parts, 'B' for bass, and 'E' for effects tracks. I also throw in two Sub tracks for interesting atmospheres and samples.

Then I break each individual track into each one of the categories listed above by phrase. I try to make sure that each phrase will naturally flow into the rest of the set on the fly in case I need to jump around. I then use 3 efx tracks that can be manipulated by each channel and add use 2 master effects on the overal mix (usually a 3 band EQ and beat repeat).

My midi controller is mapped very extensively to each parameter I want to control. I've mapped in a way where I can flow back and forth between my turntable, effects processor and controller very fluidly.

This works for me. Within some of my scenes I have set up follow actions to help scenes flow, so don't discount these very powerful tools. Since I'm cutting up in between tracks, these become quite useful in the overall sound of the piece.

I hope this helps...

sweet man!

loved the links

well...i still have not played my tracks live
but when i do dj other people's tracks i approach it like i used to when djing with turn tables and cds

4 channels

channel 1 (a)
channel 2-3 around 50 tracks for me to choose from (i still never really plan a set, all the tracks are warped)
channel 4 (b)

channel a and b are mapped to my midi controller
(start, stop, loop start, cross fader, faders, etc)

channel a and b have an effects rack with ping pong delays, beat repeat, etc also mapped to the knobs on the controller..

this is very simple to use and i've been using it for a while now

i will have to change this when i do a set of my own tracks only, but for now that is what i'm using.

peace!

I perform in a band, so I use Live in a multifunctional kind of way, but all within the same set.

It's my guitar effects rig, operated using an FCB1010 (i used to use an old midi keyboard with sticky tape over the keys as my MIDI pedals), provides backing vocal effects for our keyboardist, and allows our drummer to program, record and play/trigger drum loops in real time (using a triggerfinger), then play a real kit over the top with a click. I also use the FCB1010 to play samples and to stop or start any clips or loops we have running. We'll use dummy clips for some scenes if we need to alter certain effects during a song.

Basically we try not to touch the laptop during a performance, except to change tempo between songs or something.
