That's just what I was listening to yesterday during a three-hour drive to my hometown. I guess I'm a bit schizophrenic in my listening, but it works for me. I had periods when I was younger that I would listen to only electronic music and prog rock, but after I started studying jazz it became infused with it all, and I guess classical music was always there I only broadened my scope within it as I learned more.

i just started to listen to old hardcore (minor threat, bad brains, black flag, etc.) again.
the year before i was into (deep)house and had a strong interest in *classic* house music.
funny, maybe its the summertime that breaks up old habits or shuffles your taste.

Lived in Seattle so I was into Built to Spill/ Modest Mouse/ 764 Hero Up Records stuff in the late 90's. Then I heard the band Wire and a Seattle band called A Frames, post punk/ no wave ish stuff. Got me to think about esthetic choices artists make instead of popular trends. Went thru big Beatles, Dylan, Talking Heads and MBV phases along the way. Now I mostly listen to old Eno rock albums and electronic or minimalist music. I find myself drawn to music where sound is important and sounds change over time based on the choices the artists make.

I just realized that as of late I'm not a huge fan of music of any form regularly. On my driving excursions I'm usually pumping the talk radio or a talk podcast with some comedic or political commentary like Adam Carolla or Real Time with Bill Maher. I think I'm at some kind of music over saturation point and more interested in filling my brain than just my ears.

I remember my girlfriend's dad in high school would only listen to talk radio and I thought what kind of soulless human being doesn't listen to music ever. And here I am...even with a big music background.

I listen to NPR or podcasts from New Yorker, Planet Money, Slate, Bloomberg (trainwreck spotting). Come to think of it, this year i pretty much only listen to the music I'm working on.

When I am involved in an active project, I am the same way with the exception of daily doses of James Brown and Bob Marley to ward off honkitis....... The singer songwriter vocalist in my latest project decided to get all sensitive and isolate this summer......

The Grateful Dead is my all-time favorite band, so I can understand why you're currently hooked.

Infrared Roses? Incredible.
Aoxomoxoa? Incredible.
Second set of 5/22/77? Incredible.
I could go on and on and on. I really don't care much for any of the other bands that have followed in their wake...Phish, Widespread Panic, SCI, etc. Not even really the same class of music.... Jerry played every note as though your life depended on it much of the time.

I've also loved their side projects.
Seastones - 70's Electronic project with Phil Lesh and Ned Lagin. Very weird.
Diga Rhythm Band - Mickey Hart's first all-percussion band....great stuff!
Old & In the Way - Jerry Garcia's bluegrass project. Or newgrass depending on who you talk to.
Planet Drum - Supralingua - Mickey Hart's semi-electronic percussion album. Aweswome!


Anyway, as for musical 180's.....I never liked Hiphop/Rap until I heard KRS-One a few years ago. Totally flipped me on that. Of course, I still don't like 95% of what I hear, but it's well worth it for that special 5%.

yeah, when i first came to this forum, i didn't like Sasha's music. I found it rather boring. Then some helpful gentlemen pointed out that i was just a sad and jealous person and i realized that Sasha actually represented the very height of everything that electronic music is all about.





in truth, my palette (and in my opinion, anybody who actually gives a shit about music should be the same way) is so wide that it would be hard to have a radical turn. I listen to music from at least 6 different decades and at least as many nations on a daily basis. There are entire universes of music to explore out there. You could spend our entire life trying to hear everything and you still might not make it. Isn't that exciting? I can't understand why anyone would box themselves in by even having a certain taste. I find it humorous at best, and depressing at worst, that some folks here consider switching genres in beatport to be a radical change in taste. the same people called me close minded for not liking Sasha's stuff. pretty funny if you think about it.

The bird song, I know you rider, dark star, cosmic charlie, china cat, morning dew, and scarlet begonias....have been really doing it for me as of late....... Jerry's guitar tone has such emotion beyond what I can explain. I have had moments of welling up emotionally and almost tearing when certain musical passages catch me
I dug rap from the 88-93 era (PE, Cypress, Cube, house of pain, snoop, dre, etc....) but once puff daddy and the like took over, I bounced!

I agree with the theme of your post, however I used to like a lot of heavy metal, speed metal, thrash, etc....I just don't any more. I respect tremendously the bands and the musicianship, but where I am at in life, I don't resonate with the message the way I did 20 years ago. Satan, death, despair, morbidity and such themes don't inspire me (and I loathe the thrash double bass snare ride drum beats......Give me something choppy, with just a kick, snare and hat)

This is basically what I was saying before. It's hard to hard to have some big genre flip once you're already listening to so much. It just becomes a matter of which artists/pieces you end up listening to.

The Morning Dew from that 5/22/77 show is...well, impossible to put into words! I heard a version from Jazz is Dead recently, and I think Jimmy Herring is a great guitarist, but he was playing that song like it was a party tune, and when Jerry played it 5/22/77, he was channeling all of the tragedy, pain and beauty of humanity. That's the difference right there.
