I picked up one of the new Echo Indigo cards to add a second soundcard to my Vaio laptop. I had reasonable latency on the internal card using the DX drivers, and I can set up the Echo as ASIO or DX. I can choose one card as the input and one as the output. What I can't do is choose the routing, which was the main reason I bought the additional card. The routing is locked to whatever I have chosen as output device, so I can't select one card for Master routing and one for Pre-Listen.
Isn't this the whole idea of "Live"...to use on a laptop--Why won't it allow this two-card setup? I don't want to get a huge breakout box like a MOTU 828

Syncing multiple soundcards isn't easy. As you have found, they all have different latencies, ASIO implementations, etc. For multiple I/O a multi I/O card makes far better sense. Trying to sync multiple cards from hundreds of vendors would be a nightmare from a software development point of view, they would have to work at the slowest cards latency at the very least.
I have a Mackie Mixtreme card here running at 64 sample latency. I wouldn't like to imagine what problems would occur and how well it would work trying to achieve the same with 8 stereo cards all with different drivers, or even the same one to be fair. Even if we could sync cards together with an internal digital link I suspect there would be trouble.

Live can just handle one audio out device at the same time.
The main reason is that two different soundcards are not sync to each other. So as result you cannot get the audio out from the one device synced to the audio from the other device.
To handle these problem some of the hardware manufactors (like Midiman, Motu,....) have drivers that can handle more than one physical
of their audio cards but for the software it appears always as one audio device.
But in your case it's not possible to use the Echo Indigo AND the internal soundcard together for audio out.
