recording macro automation into a clip?

Post by edit_machine » Wed Mar 25, 2009 12:14 am

is it possible to record real time automation of a macro control into a clip that is in the session view? how can i accomplish this? for instance, i have the filter of "analog" mapped to macro 1. i'm still in the early stage of composition so i don't want to commit anything to the arrange view yet but i would like this parameter to be automated within the clip. i know how to use the automation envelope of the clip to draw in a curve for this parameter, but is there a way to record my real time movement of the macro control as the clip plays?

thanks in advance for help!

esiest way i know is go ahead and record it in the arranger view then copy it from the arranger view into a new clip that way the original is the same.

I tried what you suggested but it did not work. I recorded into the arrange page, moved the macro control in real time, and could see and hear that automation in the arrange page, but when i dragged the selection with the automation i liked back into a new clip the new clip did not have the automation. in fact it seems that the clip's envelope automation for this parameter and the arrange page's automation are completely separate because i also tried to copy the arrange page automation to the clip's envelope for the same parameter with no success. what am i doing wrong?

Im sorry you have to right click freeze track then right click again and flatten it to lock in all changes.

i see, i did this and it creates an audio file that does lock in all the changes but of course i can't edit the envelope anymore at this point. effective but inflexible, i don't want to lock in my changed in a permanent way at this point, is there any way to simply record real time automation into a clip?

(also didn't really understand)

my way:
automate in arrangement view
then ctrl alt c - ctrl v from arrangement to clip view. the part of clip view you want to copy in... must be selected

the "automation" in clips is actually "modulation" and relative to the actually set value of the parameter. If the clip-envelope is a going up and down 100% and the macro-knob is set to 0 then there will be no effect at all. Turn the macro knob up to 100% and see how the same clip envelope is modulating it.

Hard to explain ... :-)

It's one of the main conceptual issues in Live's design. People wish to record automation into clips since ages, but apparently it would need a complete re-design of Live's way of working to implement that.

the trick is:
not just copy paste
but
alt ctrl c (apple alt cmnd c)
then select the places in the note editor where you want to copy it
and then paste.

i see! yes this explains some other questions i have had regarding the interactions between the parameters. thank you!

So how would the AIC Bus method work with an APC40?
