better handlin of instrument presets [fxb + fxp]

Post by attrib » Thu Jul 23, 2009 2:59 am

when saving presets of vst instruments... its extremly primative ... saving the fxp or fxb file to a location then having to browse for it for each different instrument or effect ... surley theres a better way of handling this ..like sx and logic do .. so when u want to load a preset u get a list of all saved presets for that particular vst ... i think sx use's xml files .. ableton needs somthin like this... pleeeeease

not really, i have a bunch of my favourite synths and drum machines in racks and i keep them all in a folder, that folder is bookmarked so its very easy to find, clicking the hotswap button takes me to all the patches that i've made for that synth

i also have a folder where i keep all my fxp/fxb patches, each synth/drum machine has its own folder
very easy to find

yeah, how many of those presets do you use anyway?

just find the ones you like, make your own, save them as "absynth... blah blah sound", so whenever you do a search, they come up.

the search function is actually pretty good if you name things, or put them in folders called useful things.

I set up folders with names like "My Favs" with in that, "Pads" and within that "Airy" or "Warm"

so, whenever i want an a sound that is one of my presets, i type in "Fav, Pad, Warm"

and i get a bunch of appropriate stuff... from whatever ableton inst or VSTi.

it's a bit of work to set it up, but it saves heaps of time in the long run.

i usually only use the patches i've made myself
i spend time making just patches, mostly using presets as a starting off point
i also make patches by loading synths in plogue bidule and using the randomise function then tweak whatever random patch that makes till i like the sound
these patches are saved in my fxp folder or in the intrument rack folder
i often make a pattern with a synth patch and save the whole thing in the clips folder
its easy to troll through patches when i'm looking for new sounds for a track
