Logic 9 out!
Re: Logic 9 out!
Yeah, this is a tough one, I can only afford to upgrade one thing...it may have to be Logic and not Live, my studio uses both. $200 for logic or $329 for Live...
Re: Logic 9 out!
Upgrade already ordered, should be here tomorrow.
While I haven't even seen it mentioned on the Apple site, it's probably worth noting that Logic Studio 9's code has also been seriously optimized, and ought to scream under Snow Leopard once that's released in September. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Logic Studio 9 runs as a 64-bit app, and includes support for the OpenCL standard that will be part of OS X 10.6. (It does specify that it's Intel-only). The new Soundtrack Pro and MainStage look hot, too. Looks like MainStage can do a whole lot more with MIDI mapping too, and there's a boast about much greater control surface support with an auto-learning ability. While WaveBurner looks like it's only a minor update (going from 1.5.x to 1.6), they mention some nice UI improvements in addition to the whole Intel-only makeover.
OpenCL is a technology that basically lets the OS and any application designed to use it tap into the additional computing power of the GPU (graphics chip). My MacBook Pro, for example, has a dual core Intel CPU in it. But it's also got an nVidia 9600m GT GPU with 32 cores in it, mostly just sitting there idling unless I'm running a big 3D app. With OpenCL, the OS and other applications can potentially tap into that extra horsepower.

Oh my god, a performance improvement!? I die!!!
logic is already a killer in low CPU strain...
hmm... Have to consider an upgrade i guess.

Not impressed at all and its just Apple putting more of the proverbial "lipstick on a pig".This is 8.5 material at best.
Re: Logic 9 out!

Re: Logic 9 out!
God at this rate of copycat-ing, the next Logic will feature a friggin' session view. not that this sort of bouncing ideas back and forth and around hasn't always been going on. but seriously, they are hyping up features we had in live 7 (slice to midi) and marketing the thing like it's Propellerhead's Record. Are you a dumb guitarist with a Mac? Make your The Killers-inspired rock hit with Logic!
sorry, being harsh. but it looks for me like a meaningless update (yeah I run Logic 8....not that it gets much use these days)....

Re: Logic 9 out!
Very much disagree with people about it being a
meaningless update. Did any of you watch the videos?
Copying Live shouldn't be considered a bad thing, but even there,
can Live transfer audio tracks from arrangement view and use the markers
to separate the audio into clips? No it cannot. Right there is a great idea
I hope we see in Live 9.... not at all a direct rip off, and somehing, along with Rewire, that makes
Mainstage really a great compliment to Live.

Re: Logic 9 out!
I don't really see any issue with them taking things from Live. They've done them their own way, AFAICT.
And to the person or two who wondered, "What's next? Stealing Session View?" They don't really need to, at least not for performance purposes. Have a look at the video for "Performing with playback" in the how to section!
The more I read/poke around, the more I think I really will get some things out of this upgrade, but I'm still not rushing out and grabbing it OMGTODAYRIGHTNOW. I think if I did more of my actual production in Logic (as opposed to having Ableton as my work horse program), I'd be all over it though.

The Flex tool, Vari speed, and selective import features are pretty cool. And the new plugins are pretty attractive.
I'm pretty sure I'll upgrade though most probably not right away.

Fuck, I've got Logic 8 on order, what should I do?
