Sound card to use with Ableton

Post by nastyrazz » Fri Jul 24, 2009 7:53 pm

Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me if an ikey connex soundcard will work ok with ableton. I want to have 1 output for my stereo out and 1 output for my headphone cueing. Also do you know if this soundcard is quite good quality?

Thanks Ryan

No idea about the quality, but it looks like that soundcard just has one stereo pair as output. Which means if you want to have a separate main out and a cue out, you need to see whether you can split up the stereo pair to 2 x mono. If cueing is important, investigate further to confirm you can do this before buying.

If you're getting a soundcard for a laptop, I would get the Echo "Indigo IO DJ" or the "Indigo IO DJx". Which one you get depends on the cardbus type in your laptop. The card costs more, but it's definitely worth it.

And if you're just starting up and aren't too concerned about sound quality, if your system is relatively quick you could very well get by with some usb sound card such as "Sound Blaster 24 USB" or another multi-output sound card....

You can get a lot of them to work great with Asio4All sound driver to get those latencies down... but beware, you'll probably be running at least 15 ms of delay... more realistically 20-25... which is great for what you want to do, but it kind of sucks trying to play a keyboard to the drums because the delay is audible.

When I first started I bought that sound card I mention for around 30 bucks brand new.... it worked just fine. And the quality was good.
