New and good USB Audio

I got the same Fast Track Ultra i'm using it for stereo drum channel, stereo synth channel, and then two more channels for Roland SPD-s and hand drums.. Also using 6 outputs and it runs perfect.. Probably more stable than my computer and Live put together (doesn't say much)

I dig that it has 6 outputs, but what do you use 6 outputs for? Other than surround sound.

routing certain tracks into outboard or a hardware mixer... etc. there are plenty of uses for multiple outs. surround comes at last into my mind.

you should look into it, not just hardware routing but generally routing of audio signals is one of the magic and to success leading tricks of the production trade.

Jekblad gave me some pointers in rounting looper so multiple audio tracks could use the same looper without necessarily being routed at the same time. I don't have any outboard gear, just a PA, so thus far there hasn't been a need to understand routing outputs, but inside a DAW I understand it more.

it's not much different just you need cabels - propellerheads reason is a good way to learn about routing you can download a demo for free.

absolut +1 for reason for learning audio routing... i even use it to train our young guys at work (audio / production / event company)
i think it's perfect for that. you get a real visual grip on what's going on and what you learn you can apply for any internal routing, e.g. ableton as well as real hardware...

output 1/2 is the first headphone out, 3/4 is the second headphone out those are my monitor's for me and my drummer. 5/6 go to the speakers.. it also has 7/8 via S/PDIF which I still think it's useless no matter what all the gearhead's say..

It's a good peice, apparently my buddy left our power strip on all night and the Fast Track was on, with Phantom power on for about 20 hours and didn't fry.. I was pretty pissed..

interesting article.

i've had m-audio state that the power switching problem is a fast track pro issue only. i've had a 410 connected to my system recently without a hitch although i wasn't using spdif and maybe the stars were aligned that day...who knows.

either way it's not an issue anymore as i sold the card. the point of buying it was for live gigs and i just didn't feel i could trust it on stage, especially considering the quality of power some venues have.

those are all points, why i am so much in favor of the presonus firebox (i know, i know it's firewire)... it is by far not the best sounding unit money can buy, but for what you pay it's absolut top notch in terms of audio quality and the built in preamps... plus it's reliable like hell, it takes anything from 9 to 15 volts AC and DC, it is not fussy at all... only drawback i ever discovered is that it want start via firewire on certain newer laptops... but with a PSU no probs, and you can't crash the drivers even if you want to... i never heard, seen or read about a single driver issue, it's stable as a rock mantled in steel. and did i mentioned it is a solid built, all steel body and knobs that don't break off.

sorry, yeah i know, i love that thing, but it is mainly because we used to sell them a plenty in our old shop and i never had a single complain nor return of a unit, opposite people came back raving about what they just got for 300 euros.
with nearly any other item that went over the counter, there was here and there a little problem... never ever with a firebox.

just sharing my experience.
