My Favourite FX:
LFO/Envelope controlled filters - FF Volcano and Filterfreak FTW!!
Anything grain-delay based
Delays with saturation stages
Algorithmic Reverbs (f*ck convolution!!!)
IMO Most underrated FX:
Distortion (particularly when mixing)
IMO Most overused FX:
Reverb - often, you only need a TINY bit!

Zebrify wins the thread!
Ok, if I would have to pick a "typical" effect unit that only does a certain thing, I guess it would have to be nonlinear gainstage of some sort. Umm, wait, technically that's a processor, not an effect? I don't care ;p
I don't really fancy distortion as such, but small doses of nonlinear gain find their way into almost every track on most of the stuff I do. Must have something to do with my age.. I actually prefer muffled, hissing, bass heavy sound to perfectly produced balanced kristal klear (TM) thingies.

fx processor = process...
nonlinear gain-stage = distortion...

I put sidechained compressor everywhere, and not only sidechained by the kick drum, but also some combinaison of synth sidechained by other sounds...
Sometimes I also used a sidechained gate instead of a compressor...

fx processor = process...
nonlinear gain-stage = distortion...
Effect: an FX processor that has wet/dry, usually used (but not limited to) via Aux sends. Almost always mixes the original signal with the "effected" signal
Processor: an INSERT-effect with usually no wet/dry controls, totally overwriting the original signal
But hell, who cares about these distinctions anymore, it's becoming more difficult every day to say which signal processor is an effect and which is a processor
and I know that nonlinear gain stage could be called distortion.. I didn't use the term to sound "snobby", I just wanted to emphasize the distinction between adding a touch of gain and dialing your axe to 11.
but feel free to hate me
And zebrify is a modular synth that takes audio as input.. so you can make audio-based modulations to all effect parameters.. dynamic modulation at it's finest :p

insert effect = serial fx processing...djwack wrote:excuse me, but what they taught me in school was:3dot... wrote:...technically you're full of it....djwack wrote:Zebrify wins the thread!![]()

aux /dryWet = parallel fx processing...
forgive me if I'm "anal"..
not hating on you ...just correcting you...

Filters. I can't stop using my MAM Warp 9 . I wish I could route my dick through it while fucking.
The Evolver's filter is also pretty good.
