You could dance to this. Well, nod your head anyway. But then again, I think this is what they meant when they coined the phrase IDM...

the thing is autechre and aphex twin are beyond genres

IDM was definitely not coined by the experts, they are too busy making music to worry about what genre it is

so to make up a genre for this experimental music is ironic

Well the whole thing is sort of a self-congratulatory pile of wank. Having an IDM genre pretty much says that whatever else that doesn't fall into this category is stupid dance music, which is of course rubbish. Take BT's "Movement In Still Life" (UK and Kong Kong releases only, not the American turd) for example -- for as cheesy as that album was, the stutters and just overall technical prowess of that album are way too advanced to be considered unintelligent. IMO.

If it were any other genre would you be as cold.

genre pointing is so stupid unless your trying to learn it.

No one ever said that the majority had more of a taste for music than the people in seedy Berlin nerd hangouts. As a matter of fact, I'm willing to go as far as assert the idea that the majority doesn't really study music the way that the minority do that listen to "IDM". It's kinda like this -- grab 100 people to look at "The Garden Of Earthly Delights" and 15 people will point out nuances like the man with the bird head, and 3 will be able to tell you that it was Bosch's finest triptych, or how wonderful the portrayal of God presenting Eve to Adam was. The other 85 will give you stock answers like how pretty (or lame) the picture is and not really reflect on it at all.

^ but what if those 85 looked at The Millennium whilst listening to Armin's ASOT 274, specifically when Darren Tate's "Hold Me Till The End (Truly Deeply Dub)"?

Probably nothing noteworthy would happen.
