How to stop a clip at position

Post by Tanakan » Fri Aug 07, 2009 3:20 pm

hello,
I'm quite new in ableton Live, and I'm using it in a none rythmic way (no tempo), just fieldrecordings, abstract sound and voices (sort of live Radio composing).

I would like to be able to stop a clip at position. When I start the clip again, the play would begin from where it stopped.

For example : I have one voice on a clip. this voice is composed of 2 sentences. I'd play the first part. than I stop it. And I
finish the last part of the voice when I hit the clip again. I know I could use 2 clips, but this is a simple example. I may use very long recorded voices, and I can"t manage hundred's of clips.

It would work as a start/stop fader on radio broadcast mixers.

thanks a lot for your help.

regards

thanks Tone Deft for your help.

it works with the shift button, but it stops all tracks ! (space bar + shift)
I'd like to stop one clip and start it again from where it stopped, while others keep playing....

you could split the clip into different parts... as in, duplicate it on the same track and use the markers accordingly.

THIS CAN BE DONE

the only down fall is that you have to turn off global quantize

that means you have to change every sample off of global if you want it to quantize start

anyway now that i got the but out of the way

HERES HOW

midi map a button to the track stop, map that same button to the sample start set

map a separate button to that clip spot to launch it again

now you have a play/restart button and a pause button

Hello,
I'm very happy it can be done ! !
But I can manage to do. Sorry I'm a newbie in Live.

I've turned off quantize in the options menu.
all samples I import in a slot are set this way in the launch tab : launch mode = toggle, quantization = none

I've tried to map keys as you said but I can't make the difference between those two function :
"map that same button to the sample start set" & "map a separate button to that clip spot to launch it again".
The stop button is OK (stop button of a track).

Could you explain me please ? I'm just learning lessons actually, and I have the french version so I have to translate... ;-)

Thanks a lot for your help. the fonction is going to be a huge feature for what I do ! !

actually in toggle mode it becomes easier

select a button to launch the clip, and use the same button to set the the start point

thats all you need just one button

the set button is in the sample menu in clip view, top right button in that box

just one problem when using this feature :

If I have the proper waveform displayed, it work properly.
If I'm working live on another clip, the key does not start the sample from where it stopped before.
So : This feature only work if we have the good clip displayed.. .

Is there another way to do it ?

How does this function work with the APC 40 ? I'm waiting for it, should receive it in a few days..
thanks

I am at Office right now, but you might have to turn the Clip you want to start where it stopped in Clip settings to Legato. Since i can not test over here, just give it a try:) I would believe it should be possible to start the clip from where stopped.

most of the assignments inside the clip view are universal to selected clips. i.e. the assignments are to the view, not the particular clip

btw, this double-assignment to the slot and start location is very clever!!

OK. Too bad... Is that something to write on the "wishes feature wishlist" ?
maybe one you guys will explain better that I can (not having the good Live vocabulary yet...)

I'll be waiting for this feature to exist. Each clip sould have a proper behavior : stop at position OR stop and go back from where it started before.

Any ideas and solutions, as long as the feature lacks, are welcome. I'd be really happy for my next concerts...
best
T.
