Rant: too much freakin beat repeat in the world!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym-CeUw9cHk
just one example of many. I mean the dudes stuff is okay (not for me but it's pretty good for what it is) but I'm so tired of hearing people beat repeat stuff up every 8 bars.
sorry, just ranting..

It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

Blame Ableton for creating the plugin.
Anyways what REALLY interests me about this video is... what kind of mod is that on the dude's APC? Monomulator?

I noticed that and yet somehow wasn't interested in the slightest bit
however I will be interested in that stuff again when M4L comes out but I also think that most of the MFL apc mods are going to be completely trash which will make me stick with the stock functionality for quite a while.

I don't think I'll be getting that much into M4L... at least not planning to for now, probably for the same reason. I won't be THAT invested in it to be creating a lot of my own tweaks. I do have MAX/MSP 5, which I barely ever use, to be perfectly honest. I'm wondering if I could resell my license (it's a student license).
And like you, I'm not too unhappy with the default functionality of my APC actually. I'm a simple man with simple needs, and it suits me relatively well.
I did however, download the nativeKontrol settings, which combine the default functionality with a few other practical mods, all easily interchangeable, and couldn't be happier about it.

There does seem to be a lot of obsession lately with things that are neat on the eyes, somewhat on the ears, but have no practical use in a prolonged situation in the real world.Johnisfaster wrote: however I will be interested in that stuff again when M4L comes out but I also think that most of the MFL apc mods are going to be completely trash which will make me stick with the stock functionality for quite a while.
Then there's videos of something that would seem like it would be useful and musical, but the five minutes of video doesn't include the many hours, days, or weeks of prep time it took to get to that one magical performance caught on tape.

it was a problem the day it stopped being an effect and turned into a style.
meh!
meh!
Re: Rant: too much freakin beat repeat in the world!
i feel much the same about a lot of fx - all the glitch stuff especially. best used as enhancements rather than as a feature in themselves, except maybe in a breakdown, otherwise you're just fucking up your dancefloor.
less is definitely more, there's a time and a place etc etc etc

Re: Rant: too much freakin beat repeat in the world!
my ears hurt. i hope he's not a real dj...
Re: Rant: too much freakin beat repeat in the world!
I will admit I went through a phase where I used BR excessively. And not so much BR, but BR-like manual edits. Maybe a lot of this stems from the fact that I used to listen to a lot of glitchier stuff coming up, such as (GASP!) BT, so it definitely influenced me.
But I agree that it has become sort of a bandwagon effect now and it does get annoying at times. I have been using it less frequently lately, though I don't see why I should stop entirely using a technique I always liked, just because it's the new fad.
Still, blame Ableton for creating BR and other programmers for creating similar "glitch on the fly" plugins. They've made it too easy for people to get carried away with it.

The world needs more Beat Repeat.
Re: Rant: too much freakin beat repeat in the world!
nah man, the dj's got free will and two ears, it's up to him to do what sounds good and use the tools in useful places.aqua_tek wrote: Still, blame Ableton for creating BR and other programmers for creating similar "glitch on the fly" plugins. the beat repeat can be great for build ups & creating tension, but a dj who's shoving in a glitchbreakbuildup thing every few bars just ain't thinking and listening properly to what he's doing.
Re: Rant: too much freakin beat repeat in the world!
Not even Glitch Mob uses this affect in their live shows that frequently. 'Nough said.
Re: Rant: too much freakin beat repeat in the world!
I'm not literally blaming the software. I'm just saying, with so many choices readily available to glitch up sets and tracks without even giving it any thought, it's easier for people to get carried away with it.
i've fallen into the trap other times as well. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, during a live performance, you just can't help but get carried away with FX.
Not really saying it as a defense point. On the contrary, just saying that we all need to work on that.

Now if you do a Beat Repeat/Filter mapped to an X/Y then you're good, no longer bandwagoning.
