Two Mac's sync issue

Post by G-lay » Wed Aug 12, 2009 2:04 pm

Hey there...

Yesterday me and some friends were trying out some new stuff.
We synced two MacBook Pro's .. one ( the master)an older coreduo MacBook Pro (one of the first series of MacBook Pro's) with Live 7
And the other ( the slave ) the previous MacBook Pro 15'' core2duo with Live 8

All went well, only the slave said that the BPM was 119.44 or so... instead of the 120 BPM of the master...

Does anyone know what we missed?

Cheers,

G-Lay

Probably as close as you're going to get with Live-Live. The Midi synching will always be bouncing around a bit from my experience...

What did you use to sync them? I want to run visuals from one laptop and live from the other and would be interested to see how you sync them?

not my experience. lately I haven't been able to get my stuff out of sync.

dunno why they would go out of sync like that, post the gear that you used.

btw what is up with putting an apostrophe on all the plural words?? it's not just this thread but people are always doing that.

How are you syncing Tone? This is still the unattainable holy grail for me...

PC -USB-> BCR -midi-> MPC

PC -USB-> SL25 -midi-> keyboard

both take ~43msec of clock delay.

PC is an HP DV8000 laptop, it seems I got lucky with the right chip set.

fair play... have you had any luck syncing two computers of any type?

I can now keep my korgs in sync with one laptop, but (like the OP) can't get two instances of live synced on 2 separate machines.

might be a non native english speaker, in several languages you write a plural like that with an apostrophe S

whoa, I never knew that!! you've restored some faith in the interwebs for me.

most non-native English speakers (err writers) are better writers than the natives.

That's why I said "Live-Live" - syncing my hardware synths to Live is fine, but syncing laptop to laptop, whether it's mac<>pc or mac<>mac is always a rough value that averages at the correct tempo, but is constantly varying above and below the target.

Did the slave stay there at 119.44 or wander around? Tried adjusting the master tempo to another value and back again? And if you both enabled your metronomes did they stay in synch? i.e. maybe a slight phase difference, but not drifting tempo...?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the reply's!
Well, we're using an ethernetcable for the syncing, trough Apple's Audio/Midi devices app.

I'll try the metronome thingy next rehearsal!
the interface that are used is an Ultralite for the master, and an Edirol for the slave (don't know the exact type)
But because we're not using them as midi devices, it doesn't sound that they are the problem

cheers,

Good louck is all I can say, and if you get it wworking, let me know how.

For reference, I've tried doing it every way I can think of...

PC>interface>MIDI Cable>Interface>PC
PC>ethernet>PC
PC>wireless Lan>PC
PC>midi yoke (in every configuration)>PC
External midi clock>>2 PCs
Hardware drum machine>>2 PCs
PC>Hardware drum machine>PC

None of these worked any better than you're reporting....

GRRRRRRRRR

I would love for you to tell me you've worked it out, but I've been at this for years without luck so I'm not holding my breath...
