HELP I'm in driver hell!

Post by djsynchro » Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:29 am

I got a Mindprint EnVoice channel strip with a built-in USB AD/DA convertor, the hardware is cool the driver is horrible!

I have the latest version, but it keeps flaking out, audio stops, hardware doesn't get recognised. The worst thing is, after uninstalling it doesn' wan to reinstall properly anymore, I've been manually deleting bit & bobs it's a fucking nightmare!!!! I also have a really old version of the driver (CD that came in the box) it's much better but there is a bug, the zero-latency monitoring doen't work aaarghhh!!!!

Is there some magic way to clean out crappy installs or do I need to re-install Windows now?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wrote to support but haven't herad from them and no phone number on the website. :x :x :x :x

install RevoUninstaller. do a deep uninstall, and remove all the stuff if finds. Works for some things.

Try to find an install log. Sometimes the developers will create one to track the installation process. If there is one, it might contain the changes made to the registry and the locations of files.

Revo does this auto. its the only uninstaller app ive ever used that does the right things, and doesnt run rampant deleting keys that are 'close'.

+1 for Revo - http://www.revouninstaller.com/. I use it any time i uninstall anything. It's rather eye opening when you see what some programs would have left behind had you used their own uninstaller.

If you use vista it should have backup points for about the last 5 registry changes which should nclude when you installed the driver. The good part is that these backups don't erase mp3 files or other unassociated registry changes you have made in the mean time!

Didn't find any leftovers (but will use it in the future to uninstall - good app to sweep the registry, wonder if it can reset demo versions by cleaning out the registry keys? )

Anhyhoo: This morning I manged to install the thing, I installed the Vista driver which is a WIN32 driver... no messages it wasn't allowed, it runs, I can now have multiple apps access the soundcard (not simultaneously but it works) and everythiong else seems to work... fingers crossed!!!!)

The main recurring problem is that the driver won't recognize the hardware and the installation will time out.
Called a friend of mine we discussed the fact that usually these things are a software problem, but SOEMTIMES it's a hardware prob;em!!! He had the brilliant idea (before pulling out my soundcard and reinstalling Windows of trying to install it on another computer... bingo didn't work either! Last night I gave up and this morning the install routine DID work, also points to a hardware proble, the thing stores stuff like samplerate so after you set it using USB you can then use it as a standalone for location recording or whatever. Also, it was a reduce priced customer return. Guess they didn't get it to work either.

I let it cool off and tried installing the driver.... bingo! Installer found the hardware, installed the soft. So it's got a problem when it gets hot. Sending it back on Monday, it's still within the 14/30 days get my money back period!

Had the same with my BCR2000; endless driver weirdness untill I read on the internets that some have faulty USB chips, took it to the store got a new one (Behringer has very cool warranty!) problem solved. If you've tried every possible software tweak it could be the hardware!

no, because this computer is used for music and nobody would have system restore active on a music computer, surely
