bending midi grooves (generalMidi) to Battery

Post by smogG » Tue Aug 18, 2009 6:39 am

Hi, Folks. I hope you can help me out!
ive got thousands of midi grooves which seem to be in the general midi chart. id like those grooves to trigger my battery kits.
my battery kits follow this structure: c1-c2=bassdrums; c2-c3=snares; c3-c4=hihats.
could a scale plugin do the trick or how could i bend the gm chart to my battery kit structure?
thanks in advance- smogG

by stacking scale plugins in chains , you can handle different notes in different ways
for instance create a chain with 2 scale plugins:
*one with a lowest value of c-2 and a range of +12
* one with a lowest value of c-3 and a range of +12
then handle each octave as you wish with pitch/arp/scale plugins

a bit of hi tech programming but you sound as if you know what you're doing

i like doing it with scale>pitch>pitch>pitch for each chain

set the scale to separate the chains, then pitch it all the way down, pitch it to the right octave, then map the third pitch 0 to +11 to a macro to select the sample to use

kick chain, scale (only C passes), pitch (-128), pitch (+36), pitch (mapped to macro 1, range 0 to +11)

and then for the others

you could even throw in a random at the end of each change for sample variation, or even better, velocity to pitch in a midi effect rack inside this instead the last pitch

wow, i just solved a problem i was having, thanks!!!!

i expected you to mention the general-midi chart and where the bd,hh,snare and so on are to give me a map.

ok,this is bending the GM set up to what your battery set up is

i used the GM Midi Map from midi effect rack>tools as a reference point

the first pitch changes the input note to the C in the scale you would like it to be in kicks C1, snares C2, etc

then the second pitch is mapped to the macros 0 to +11 so you can collapse this and have control over which kick, snare, hihat sample you use from battery by changing the sent pitch

Care to share your midi grooves?

I would like to do it the other way, convert my Battery Kits to Drum Racks and then play around with the midi mapping. Anyone know how to best do this?
