Can a really clever guy score low on a IQ test?

Re: Can a really clever guy score really low on a IQ test?
IQ tests just test the ability to think outside the box, right? You're supposed to take them when you are younger. I've taken one recently and the result determined I was a "visual mathematician". I believe that was the phrase used. And it proceeded to tell me that Einstein was the same.
I suppose the answer to your question is MAYBE!?! But I ask, why are you concerned with this? Did you get a score of "Dumbass" on an IQ test???

Re: Can a really clever guy score really low on a IQ test?
Yes, it's possible I would suppose. One of the more popular, though still questioned modern theories of intelligence is Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence. Basically, he proposes that there are multiple categories that make someone intelligent. They are Linguistic Intelligence, Mathematical Intelligence, Musical Intelligence, Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence (Basically athleticism), Spatial Intelligence, Interpersonal Intelligence and Intrapersonal Intelligence. Most IQ tests I've taken have focused heavily on Mathematical Intelligence and Spatial Intelligence, which leaves people in the other categories out in the cold. Then again, does being athletic actually constitute intelligence, as well as being quick to learn and understand other people? I would say yes since the brain is ultimately behind both of those traits.
It really just depends on what one would consider to be clever since it's such a broad term.

Although I've never taken one myself I'd say yes. I agree with people who think intelligence doesn't work across the board and there are many forms of intelligence such as emotional, spacial, mathematic etc. Also I think intelligence isn't static and can be improved with discipline like physical fitness.

the people that design those tests know that already and know more on the topic than you would, right?ikeaboy wrote:Although I've never taken one myself I'd say yes. Maybe you just gave yourself too much credit?

I think if the OP is talking about a "really clever guy" then they are likely to be thinking "clever" in conventional terms. IE: good with numbers, have nifty linguistic skills, excellent pattern matching abilities, decent memory, etc.Spikee wrote: Most IQ tests I've taken have focused heavily on Mathematical Intelligence and Spatial Intelligence, which leaves people in the other categories out in the cold. I doubt that someone with incredible "emotional intelligence" alone would describe themselves as "incredibly clever", more likely to choose words like "empathetic and intuitive"
"clever" to my mind denotes those things that IQ tests are looking for.
Other modes of aptitude are can be bundled under that word, but while Wayne Rooney may be a "genius on the ball", I doubt anyone would call him a "really clever guy"
So, to the OP : It seems you got stupiderer

Nah, did not mean nifty linguistic skills, excellent pattern matching abilities. Just someone being described as a really smart dude.

iq tests dont measure imagination: which is what true genius thrives on.

Actually although I haven't taken a test myself my day job is to design intelligence tests for Mensa. Been doing it part time since I saw the job on a card in my local job centre when I was 17. Moneys good too!Tone Deft wrote:the people that design those tests know that already and know more on the topic than you would, right?ikeaboy wrote:Although I've never taken one myself I'd say yes. Not sure I would agree with this. To me, Clever denotes the ability to improvise. To adapt and over come quickly. More so a form of intuitive applied reason Intelligence to me seems logical. Clever seems more to denote an imaginative application. Just thinking.

That's what better than a majority of them that are considered geniuses say anyway. I would agree.dredd i knight wrote:iq tests dont measure imagination: which is what true genius thrives on.

you know how many idiots I've heard dream up big ideas for patents and inventions but never actually make anything?
hard work is what genius thrives on.
