I don't remember, do you DJ with a laptop, CDs or vinyl??

true. beauty will be in the eye of the beerholder.

some people get lazier with technology's convenience.
some people avoid it altogether and don't advance in that area.
some people use it to extend their lives. I'm kind of between the last two groups only because I don't have an iPhone type device and don't know how to send texts, or walk around surfing the web.

I'm just setting aside money now for CovOps max4Live patches. no clue what I might make with max4Live, probably simple widgets then something larger later on. I love workarounds, max4Live should be great for that.

honestly, ever since the first time i touched ableton, my biggest complaint was "why doesn't everything have an lfo ability?"

this gives me that functionality plus so much more

just think of all the possibilities now for us non-dj live users

programmable arps, any midi conversion (pitch > velocity, velocity > CC, etc), better 2 way controller communication, the list goes on

i hate hunting down solid, free 3rd party plugins, you end up with 30 worthless ones for something usable

then there are the plugins for sale, which i always feel that i could do equally as well with ableton racks and a little fooling around

ableton doesn't deal well with 3rd party midi plugins, routing becomes hectic, sets begin to look gross, but wait now you can build your own, functional inline midi plugin? sign me up

i can understand how in the studio M4L is not going to be the biggest plus ever

but for people who are performing, people who would rather use sampler or a personally built instrument rack, people looking for a solution to a problem, people like me

M4L is the solution

It's hilarious to see "this isn't about making tunes!" on a forum devoted to computer music production software. It's like that lame "drum machines have no soul" bumper sticker except in this case it's even weirder because the people who think drum machines have no soul are using drum machines themselves.

Someone was working on a "live performance setup."

I'm actually working fairly hard on a nicely general live performance setup in Max and Live, using Max's js object.

It's all controlled through tables in a text file. It helps if you have a little Javascript to edit the tables but that isn't strictly needed.

I'll be "releasing" something in the early autumn (open source). The code is quite short. I expect it to work quite nicely with M4L.

I probably should have held my comments until this thing is actually released and see something that interests me coming from it.

Some people like to work on cars and others just want to get from A to B.

trust me, some interesting things are going to come out of it

between the stuff you will make to suit your own needs and the stuff that other people will share, each customer will get so much more than an equal amount of money spent on vsts would give you

i already have 3 ideas in the works and the things not out yet

That's awesome.

how could you work that in then,

so I hve a single bar melody which i have as a clip and then use max to somehow transform some of the notes, then some kind of meta clip which keeps transforming every x number of repetitions, then another meta meta clip which does the same for all of the next level back down? oh this is making my head hurt now in a good way.

been rocking this idea using step sequencers for a bit (numerology) but havent got round to actually working oout how to do it. . .

Hmmm, interesting concept :)
I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

That's fine and dandy (and easy) to say towards DJs but I'm saying your job/creativity is next on the chopping block. This may not concern or bother some people and I understand that but some day Script #5 is going to write songs just as good as yours, probably with better production.
drum machines did not spell the end of drumming, or the end of creativity using drum machines.

Live was prototyped using Max MSP, its not bullshit, its the code. you can make anything that you can conceive of, though obviously that is limited by what you can conceive of. The only problem i find is the lack of limits, though if you are disciplined with the way you use it, its incredibly powerful. Its like giving LSD to your workstation. Some people on LSD discover DNA, some twirl poi.

i just wish they'd hurry up with the release

that's so much less fun though. this way we can argue about stuff that doesn't exist and when it is released and it's nothing like we're talking about we'll have completely new things to argue about!!

This is a funny thread.

Reminds me of the guys at band practice who always have some comment on how computers are faulty or less creative than Analog Synths.

Makes me wonder if Cavemen beat the S*%#! out of some guy who made a spear for the first time. Then he kills some beast, and has big feast. After that they were all like, WHOA! I want a spear.

So is M4L really evolution? How many people are really inovative or creative for that matter? Isn't Ableton a diluted version of an indigenous drum, or at least a perspective?

For me a tecnological leap in evoulution would be when people let eachother be.

As M4L goes, at least I will be like all you other monkeys entertained with a new toy. Maybe some of you other cats really are more evoled and it shows everytime you knock someone elses desires.

I really doubt music gear will be a factor in the demise of humaity and creativity. I worry more about idiots breeding with idiots.

So really when is M4L comming OUT!!!
I noticed a "Coming Soon" tag on the Ableton site. That is a recent change and I am pumped YO!
