Pure Live vs. Reason and Live
I am looking at stepping up and getting some education on Ableton, I have never used the built-in instruments in the program and figures I would just make loops with Reason and import.... Is there advantages in using these vs. Reason? All thoughts, comments, and bashings are welcome.

Re: Pure Live vs. Reason and Live
To my mind it's a bit of a cumbersome workflow to use two separate sequencers for one overall song (e.g. building loops in reason's sequencer then importing them into live's sequencer). I re-wire reason into live solely for the instruments in Reason, then do all midi sequencing in Live. In other words, I never touch reason's sequencer, but have a big rack of reason instruments that are assigned to channels in live. This works great for me. I actually think reason's sequencer is a pretty good one, but I've never seen the point in sequencing midi in multiple locations for one overall project -- screws with my brain.

reason used to be ahead of the game in multisamples but you can get the live suite with just as good piano samples...
no use for reason unless for some reason you like to confuse yourself with pointless cable patching to the point of insanity when all that was needed was a simple drop down menu and knob

Whichever works best for you. I stopped using Reason as soon as Live got MIDI support. I definitely wrote different music in Reason, which I sometimes miss, but its too much of a pain for me to use both.
Re: Pure Live vs. Reason and Live
I just recently stopped using Reason, not just with Live 8 Suite, but with the combination of 8 Suite and the Samplification package (and the other Live packs). That extra Samplification pack added those few instruments that I used to go back to Reason for.
However... I have a strong, up to date computer, if you have a weak or poorly managed computer, Reason would still come in handy cause it uses much less resources.
Eventually I may sell my Reason license, but not until I have either tracked-out or rebuilt all my old Reason songs..... Hmmm actually, I have too much stuff on Reason to sell it.
So yes, Live only, but it has to be Suite 8 and with the extra free Live packages.

It is one option, use it too, works fine, but I use sometimes Reasons sequencer, midi is much tighter then of Live that is why I do important rhythmical parts in Reason then export to Live. Then I like Reason Drum Kits better then any other, originally I bought Reason only to use the RDK. The Thor could be reason enough to get Reason, I dont like + use any other Reason instruments.mholloway wrote:To my mind it's a bit of a cumbersome workflow to use two separate sequencers for one overall song (e.g. building loops in reason's sequencer then importing them into live's sequencer). 3rd, use Reason like sketch pad (as mentioned since it is close system midi is tight) export and replace with VSTs or hardware synths. Suite as replacment for reason wouldnt work for me, I like Ableton instruments like Operator etc but hate all and any of the synths they buy from that French company whatever its name. Still that is me, some people love those.

Re: Pure Live vs. Reason and Live
to be honest, since i got the suite 8 i only open reason to use thor... and in general just to add a track or two to a project i'm working on, never much more than that, and always controlled through live
reason rewired into live works great when creating
i've never used it live though

Re: Pure Live vs. Reason and Live
I use Reason just for drums cause you send them thru 1 Scream set on tape and another Scream set on a little touch of digital and all of a sudden it sounds like an SP-1200. Can't do it in Ableton for the life of me.

Re: Pure Live vs. Reason and Live
for me you want to have as many options as you can get you hands on when creating. sometimes i use just ableton, sometimes jest reason on its own (horror - shock) and sometimes both. If i got rid of reason i can guarantee when i made a track i would think "some thor sub bass would go with that" ect ect...
Mind you as above i use the a midi track in ableton not the sequencer in reason (most of the time)

Reason is like the ex you just can't break away from and keep having relations with.......
I am such a creature of habit when I start a track, some sketch begins on reason.

Re: Pure Live vs. Reason and Live
Thanks for all the replies... I will concentrate on Ableton first since I don't currently have a copy of Reason, my goal is to make a live set (to play live, that is), so manipulate-ability is more important than ultimate sound quality.
