MIDI latency (again i guess)

Post by sylvain » Sun Aug 16, 2009 7:22 pm

i (new user :P)

i start to creat "complicated sessions"
i use live with external synths.
the more i add plug ins, the more latency i get when playing on the master keyboard MIDI linked to my synths :P

what is strange is that the problem comes from MIDI.. not audio.
if i play directly on the synth's keyboard, latency is ok. means live receive audio, drives it through all plugs and out to motu quite fast.

but if i use the master keyboard linked to live through MIDI, then it's almsot unplayable.

i'm suprised MIDI takes so long to be treated by live ... am i doing something wrong ?
it's a MIDI track with [external instrument] driven to GROUP with some plugs and MASTER with some plugs.

my old 1040ST was dam fast for midi 8O

i use motu ultralite and bugffer is 128.

----
edit
just wrote the message above ... back to play MIDI on live and latency is better now ... did nothing (i remembered)
... but but...why ... WHYYY :o

ok..

let me explain it in detail a strange midi latency again :

i have 3 external midi synth (A/B/C)
for each of them i open a midi track and drop a external instrument plugin on each
set all in & outs all is ok (all syth using same MIDI output they just have different channels)
when i play i have no delay.

now i go for a big session (samples, reaktor etc..) i still have my external synth track and i add ompressor and EQ on them. all are sent to same return track then sent to master outupt.
then, whatever i do i have a delay on synth B that is way bigger than 2 other synth.

when i arm all tracks in rec and play on the keyboard so i play all external synth + internal samplers, they sound with no delay (!)
now if i record the same note one each tracks and get it played by live then synth B is incredibely late !
all delays are set to 0. no midi latency on any external synth plugin.
i understand that delay goes bigger if session gets crowdy... but why is there a different between these tracks ?
can you explain me why ?

+ if i increase buffer of my motu ultralite .. this delay goes bigger and bigger ... there's something i really don't understand there :P

Did you try turning off Live's Delay Compensation (Options menu) to find out if it's connected to that?

It's well possible that your interface is the culprit though. How many Midi notes/events are transfered and what Midi drivers do you use (CoreMidi, MME, DirectMusic)? If you are on Windows try changing the Midi driver via Live's Preferences (small arrow left of Midi Port).
I object to how easy this forum can be used with fake accounts and question the continuous banishment of one specific user while allowing others to repeatedly publish insults, adult content, anti-women and anti-homosexual propaganda and racist statements.

The latency would probably also change if you disable monitoring for some tracks.
Make a post in the troubleshooting forum, my guess it is a long standing bug with midi that ableton considers a feature.

Chapter 31, page 500 in the Live user guide explains Live why there is a bit of delay in the midi timing. They sacrifice midi timing for perfect audio.
