so I've loaded Fruity loops as a vst, made some beats in the step sequencer, when I press play in Live i'd like fruity to start on the one as well, what am i missing?

Re-Wire
If you have FLStudio 5 it has Re-Wire support. Check the help files to setup FLStudio as a rewire client. Bring up to 16 different channels from FL into Live. It will also be tempo synced and the transport controls will be slaved as well. I have it setup this way because I like FL's step sequencer to add/change simple beat patterns on the fly.
