Help with making string instruments

Post by sleepydrewgre » Mon Aug 31, 2009 5:29 pm

has anyone come up with a good way to produce a string instrument such as a violin or a viola (a individual or section) using the live light 7 edition? I only have a mic, guitar, and ableton. Thanks for the help.

besides samples... you may have to get an add on like Operator (which is worth the loot IMO) You'll have a lot more flexibility if you do.

Each sound has 3 defining characters: (check out http://personal.cityu.edu.hk/~bsapplec/characte.htm)
  • Pitch
  • Quality
  • Loudness
to make your guitar sound more "violinish" you need to change each of these qualities:
  • Pitch - The stringed instruments are defined by a slight vibrato, subtle changes in pitch caused by the shaking of the finger. Put a frequency shifter on the wave form with a 5-10 hz LFO moving the pitch by 5-10 hz
  • Quality - also known as Timbre. Try messing around with EQ's till you reach a sound you like. Google around a bit on the defining frequency ranges of a stringed instrument. Also add a reverb/delay and a bit of feedback or saturation.
  • Loudness - This will really blow your mind. The main characteristic of stringed instruments is the attack. The defining sound of a heart breaking stringed instrument is the slow attack. Put an envelope on the guitar making the attack super slow - something like 100-200 ms.
check out this amazing demonstration of a violin/cello guitar:

Very slow attack, lot's of lows on the EQ a truck full of reverb and some distortion
amazing!

Cheers :)
