dj'ing with the apc40 setup
I've hit a road block trying to design an ableton set to dj with (dubtep/electro). Mainly I can't figure out the best mapping for my apc40, and I really want a good effects rack to use but I'm no good at making my own (got ableton 4 months ago).
Anyone have any ideas or racks that they can share with me? I was thinking about buying the Native Kontrol mapping for the apc40 but i'm concerned about it having a proper dj'ing eq setup. http://www.nativekontrol.com/ shttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMfcr0JraUk
I'm dj'ing in sydney three weeks from now and I really wanted to make a mix cd to pass out before then. I've got the beginners understanding of how to do this but I'd love some advanced tips/tricks.
Thanks so much
P.s. Ableton and the apc40 has opened the biggest artistic door, it blows my mind how amazing this is. Yes... I'm still drooling 4 months later

I've been using the native effects like Fade to Grey, Electronica1 & 2, and the DJ Master Rack. Look into some of those.

Awesome!Tarekith wrote:Thanks man, there's more on the way!
But please do NOT make them Live 8 specific; there are still so many of us on Live 7!

Re: dj'ing with the apc40 setup
i grabbed the dj effects wich are all awesome, so it would have been rude not to set up a dj templte for the APC.
heres what ive done so far.
ableton and APC chnnels 1 & 2 are decks/tunes. 1 & 2 sent to master sends disabled, ableton channels 3 and 4 are used as my sends they take an audio in pre efx from chanels 1 & 2. set to zerro db on the faders out as send only and removed from apc controll except for the toggle on off buttons wich are mapped to apc record arm buttons of channels 1 & 2, ableton 5 & 6 each has a rack of 4 loopers, taking there imput from the sends 3 & 4
collum 3 of the apc clip launch matrix buttons 1-4 as looper record buttons, the fith being stop/mute all 4 loopers. column 4 does the same job for the other four loopers.
i then have all 8 loopers play buttons mapped across the clip stop buttons.
each rack of loopers has master volume mapped to faders 3&4 of the apc, each looper then has its own volume control mapped to the top bank of knobs on the apc, brought into focus with the send A button. a have the deck EQ's mapped on the same knobs under pan. and that is the only button push i need to make to switch function of anything. no need to shift, scroll or anything else.
the last four faders on the apc, will be assigned to the effects returns i think.
thats it so far. seems like a basic but good fun set up for now. its all new to me so i need a layed back set up i can easily keep on top of for now.
the only thing on my wish list would be to have a hack so the APC could have a proper extra bank using different midi messages that i could just switch/shift into.
does anyone know if thats even possable?

Just what you asked i think, you need bomes to do the conversions and a lot of time on your hands, this took me about two weeks solid to decipher what the APC wanted to do and what i needed it to do!
Cheers

Re: dj'ing with the apc40 setup
i had seen the video, looks like an awsome set up, im trying hard to avoid bomes (i know i cant) or i'll be loosing to much sleep.
all that tinkering gets a bit obsessive and counterproductive for me.

You are absolutely right, i'm about a fortnight late for my last mix and it's all because of tinkering!

@ S4racen
i saw your video as well. very impressive, made me buy bome's
i'm curious as to how you set up lucifer to do the step sequencer mangling stuff (i think you were using the track select buttons). i know a lot of ppl are asking you questions, so i'll understand if you cant be bothered

Not a problem, Lucifer is set to the stepper mode and then i feed it midi by firing dummy clips, if it's playing it gates out the normal signal (although this is adjustable..... The dummy clips are on gate mode so it doesn't neccessarily need bomes to make it work....glamourboy wrote:@ S4racen

ps i'm trying to work on a native version that does similar but doesn't use lucifer, i'll probably package it all up with the Bomes Player and put it up here someday....

you should open a bome's thread here, for people to share their experiences. i know julian over at the MT forum is offering great support, but i think a dedicated bome's/ableton thread would be justified.
i got the step mangler going in a different way and i think i over complicated it, but it taught me to make buttons flash when pressed
cheers.
