apc control, without a apc

Post by theologiae » Sat Aug 29, 2009 4:07 pm

hi all,

i was wondering if anyone has an idea about a method of control i want to use. i have a nanoPad from korn and i want to use it to control clips in the same way an apc does, but i need to be able to select a section of clips in a successive pattern so i don't run into scaling issues. if i was you just assign a clip to a pad (say cc1) that pad will always control that clip, and because i only have 48 usable pads slots on a nanoPad, i would run out of space to play a full live gig. that and it would be hard to keep all the pad assignments straight in my head.

so what i want to to be able to scroll across the session view just like the apc does, selection a range of clips at one time. so i would start at scene launch set 1, where my first pad (cc1) would trigger the first clip in scene set 1. i could then scroll down one, now controlling scene launch set 2, where my first pad (cc1) will now control the second clip in that same track.

am being clear?

is this something i'm going to have to wait to code into max? or is there a trick to doing that same kind of control now with other controllers?

sounds like you should just buy an apc.

from what I have read online I think that the functionality you're looking for is currently locked up in the remote script for the apc - the apc is just sending midi data like any other controller and Live knows that the apc is there due to the sysex handshake the apc sends Live.
I would hope that non-apc users will be able to get that sort of functionality once the official api is published- which I think will have to happen once max for live is released.

thanks oddstep. i figured as much, just thought i'd ask to see if there was a trick around to do this. i would like to not have to buy an apc, but i might come to it. we'll see when max comes out for live.

thanks.

Sounds like you just need to map the scene up and downs and the global track and scene launch buttons and you would be fine.

but i want to have a lot more control over the clips i'm playing. if i have a bass line in a track that i want to cut for some crazy reason that i typically have tracked through the whole song, i would like to not have the grab my mouse and just kill that clip. i would like to have micro control over the whole session without having a button assigned to each clip, which would need 100's of buttons.

that's the idea.

You wouldn't have to touch the mouse. There are global track launch and stops that can be mapped. An up and down to cycle through the clips.

These controls only pop up when you hit the midi map button.

the guys at nativeControl might have something else.

Also google MonomeKontrol. It's by another guy but it's very clever way of emulating an APC.

At the moment, NativeKONTROL's nanoLive is the best way to get the most out of your nanoKontrol.

If the nativekontrol does not work with a nanopad you could try and customise the pads python script that is part of this remote script for the nanocontrol... http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/08/1 ... -for-live/ --- this seems to have pretty good clip navigation functionality.... or you could try mackie emulation to do the same thing without having to understand python. If you don't want to simultaneously launch multiple clips on multiple scenes this might work for you.

you might consider using the drum rack for holding your clips instead of the session view. i think it supports a kind of scrolling. its designed to mimic an mpc style interface, but to run the full range of midi notes.

you can assign the pads to the drum rack slots and maybe use key mapping on the laptop to assign some buttons for scrolling.
