Hey Mr DJ
I don't imagine for a second that life could possibly be this simple, but...
If I have 2 USB audio devices plugged into my Powerbook, would I be able to address them as 2 sets of outputs from Ableton Live / Cubase etc ?
(ie. 2 of the Edirol UA1A's, running the ASIO driver from Propogamma).
Anyone tried this - or is it a non-starter ?
cheers

2 different audiodevices
i havent tried using two different sound devices with Live, but i have done it with Linux DJing software called GDAM (ffem.org/gdam). since the latencies were different and always shifting it wasnt very practical to do anything with.
perhaps you already have 2 of the edirol units and that's why you ask, but there are a variety of USB audio interfaces that have more than 1 stereo output (e.g., emagic 2|6, midiman quattro, the higher-end hammerfall multiface). using one of these would eliminate those syncing problems.
and, it might even be cheaper than buying two edirols.

hammerfall correction
actually, i may have spoken out of turn about the hammerfall: it has a cardbus interface and im not sure if it can be used via USB.

re using 2 usb devices
I've spoken to ableton and they said that to get the 2 ouptut functionality - you need a single usb/sound card with 2 outputs - it won't work with 2 of those Edirol usb devices.

Do you know if they said anything about this ever changing in future releases? (See my post to "Wishlist" forum copied below.)Mark0 wrote: I've spoken to ableton and they said that to get the 2 ouptut functionality - you need a single usb/sound card with 2 outputs - it won't work with 2 of those Edirol usb devices.![]()

ABLETON, CAN YOU TELL US WHETHER THIS IS A PLANNED FEATURE, USING TWO SOUND DEVICES AT ONCE?
If it's impossibility--perhaps because of latency mismatch or other architectural issues--it would do us a *huge* favor to let us know. I have a US-428 and am wondering if I'll ever get seperate preview monitoring. Otherwise, in the long term, it's probably useless to me. And to other folks who are thinking about getting into this scene, not knowing this information means not knowing which $400-$1000 sound card to buy.
It'd be GREAT to hear that this may be available eventually, even if we have to wait a year or two.
Thanks.

Two Audio Devices Under ASIO=IMPOSSIBLE! PERIOD!
sorry, that's life under ASIO. ASIO can only host a single audio device at a time, regardless of what app. you use. You can, however, run one device under ASIO and another one under a different audio system, such as MAS, as long as that second device has native support for it. For example, I run a Korg Oasys under ASIO in Digital Performer simultaneously with a 2408MkII running native under MAS. To expect Ableton to develop a proprietary audio system or license someone else's and build compatibility into Live seems unreasonable at best.

How about soundmanager
How about the soundmanager driver in powerbooks?
Could you run ASIO for an audio box and use soundmanager for the built in audio card on powerbooks?
And for that matter, how does mac os X change things in regards to ASIO?

does ppc have core audio? if so then you can run two sound cards. i think?
i ran a soundcard plus the onboard soundcard no prob with ableton... can't remember if it was on my old powerbook or my macbook.
go to applications, utilites, audio midi setup, go to the menu bar in that then open aggregate devices. pick your shit then presto! open ableton audio menu and dilly dally with that for a bit. hope this helps
