That Watergate "who's playing tonight" check is legitimate, I think. One time in 10 I've been asked that at Watergate for the BPitch birthday party - of course you know who's playing! - and we were let in no problem...
i agree with what you say about the OP, but i also think those clubs suck, watergate used to be pretty good, though.... Before they reconstructed.

And OK, that's me... I just don't get that berlin club hype...

Yeah, maybe that's the difference... I don't go there regularly, but only for special events... e.g. Monolake!

Try getting in with Ableton hoodies

Got to the door with some fellow Live users, all wearing Ableton hoodies.. We were refused. When we asked "why?", Sven replied "Because I say so".

Walk around the corner, changed sweater and we went in individually.
7 AM on a sunday morning. The party was just getting started there..

:D Yeah, I remember hearing that story - you must've looked like a stag party, all married for life to your favourite DAW... for better, for worse...

You would be very unlucky to experience this at the most mainstream clubs in the uk and certainly not atsomewhere playing electronica. In summary WTF !?!?
Welcome to Berlin! Welcome to Germany!
Berlin isn't progressive nor forward looking, because that would mean that people would have to question their own lives and themselves and would have to team up more.
I got the feeling that at the moment it's all about being hip and that is what exactly makes people become uptight.
Few people around here are hip in a natural way, at least according to my impression. The majority just doesn't get that solely fancy clothes, fancy hair, fancy friends, fancy acting and fancy money won't make you hip.
Nonetheless this way of thinking seems to be deeply rooted in German society; I just have to think of the classical novellas "Der Hauptmann von Koepenick" and "Kleider machen Leute" (though the author from the latter hails from Switzerland).
I once went to a jam session in a famous Berlin jazz club which usually was opened by great musicians and the entry used to be for free. It was so crowded in there that I couldn't get a seat, but that didn't matter to me, it was that no one was listening to the musicians on stage. People were chatting so loud that even I didn't hear much of the music. And the band was full of brass which means they are really loud anyway! Isn't that pure shite!?
In my opinion there's currently not much great coming out of this city that one could label as typical Berlin.
I mean Live for example could also have been developed in Munich or Leipzig or in whatever "rotten village".
And yeah lots of people in Berlin seem to dislike tourists. But it's not the tourists that suck, it's 92% of the people that live in Berlin that suck.

Maybe you should try to go to Tape Club. http://www.tapeberlin.de/
jazz is a woman's tongue in your mouth
cool, licking you slowly, revolving around
inside your cheeks.
letting you know who's come to visit.

well you went to places that suck, they´ve become way too commercial and overcrowded, thats why they´re forced to not let everybody in. You should have asked one of us we know the right places :) . Sorry about that experience, sucks.

@ Big V

i can relate to most of what you said, except that me calling the rest of the country a rotten village, is making you  , jeez berlin is to me far away from being a really nice place, but it is still a million times better then the entire rest of this country. At least to me!

And the worst are the germans from elsewhere being and acting cool, hip and metropolitan, because they live here now. Yuck!

I've been thrown out of clubs but never denied entrance. I hate clubs where people go to be seen in the scene. f-c the beautiful people.

+1

Which is why I go to free parties and small festivals instead. A good night in a good club is a rare and wonderful thing.... but these days there is just too much bullshit around the clubbing "scene"... Its all about elitism being seen... and the in the UK the attitude of door staff and bar staff is a joke.

subfunk dude, seems like you have a mighty berlin hangover...
i think berlin clubbing is way overrated. the pseudo-religious press fuzz about berghain/bar25 is utter bullshit IMO. i have been to berlin a few weeks over the summer (work) and must admit that all those "great" places went sour.
better places: club der visionäre on sunday morning, tape (allreay mentioned), //:aboutblank, rechenzentrum (depends), and so much more.

shameless self promo: i spin on 19th of september at //:aboutblank, so pm me for guestlist and we can drink and läster all night long.

piece,

On a side note: any of you Berliners know a club called RAW Tempel? We have a gig there on Oct 24th. The last club we played in Berlin was absolute shit - Eel Pie - hoping for a better experience this time... :D

Looking forward to hopefully meeting a few of you volk! :D :D :D
