I have heard of berlin as a lprogressive and forward looking city and am very much confused by this expereince in todays day and age. Have we been very unlucky ???? You would be very unlucky to experience this at the most mainstream clubs in the uk and certainly not atsomewhere playing electronica. In summary WTF !?!?
Welcome to Berlin! Welcome to Germany!
Berlin isn't progressive nor forward looking, because that would mean that people would have to question their own lives and themselves and would have to team up more.
I got the feeling that at the moment it's all about being hip and that is what exactly makes people become uptight.
Few people around here are hip in a natural way, at least according to my impression. The majority just doesn't get that solely fancy clothes, fancy hair, fancy friends, fancy acting and fancy money won't make you hip.
Nonetheless this way of thinking seems to be deeply rooted in German society; I just have to think of the classical novellas "Der Hauptmann von Koepenick" and "Kleider machen Leute" (though the author from the latter hails from Switzerland).
I once went to a jam session in a famous Berlin jazz club which usually was opened by great musicians and the entry used to be for free. It was so crowded in there that I couldn't get a seat, but that didn't matter to me, it was that no one was listening to the musicians on stage. People were chatting so loud that even I didn't hear much of the music. And the band was full of brass which means they are really loud anyway! Isn't that pure shite!?
In my opinion there's currently not much great coming out of this city that one could label as typical Berlin.
I mean Live for example could also have been developed in Munich or Leipzig or in whatever "rotten village".
And yeah lots of people in Berlin seem to dislike tourists. But it's not the tourists that suck, it's 92% of the people that live in Berlin that suck.
Maybe you should try to go to Tape Club.
