[housey] So Long

Post by bodo » Mon Sep 07, 2009 8:06 pm

Sunkissed melodic groove with lots of hang (pan) drum and Waldorf Blofeld action and a little u-he Zebra.
Like the title suggests it's rather long and takes a while to get anywhere.

So Long @ soundcloud

Enjoy!

I lkie it ! It's a nice ambient sound ! I think you have pretty good audio engineering skills as it sounds awesome on my setup !
I also like the groove a lot ! Good job man.

P.S. : I really don't mind it takes time to get going anywhere actually ;-)

Like it also: the mix and the sound.
But sometimes I would wish a bit more transparency in the sound to hear the different instruments more for them self, or was it your intention to do it exactly like this?

Chears!

Thanks again for the kind words :)
I know what you mean Musozo, I tend to layer too much stuff and forget to let the elements breathe once in a while. While I like the effect, sometimes it's better to have more focus on things I guess. It's just so tempting to think 'well, this could sound nice with this on top/underneath' so you end up with a more murky sound... The track I'm working on now is even worse :) But I'm gonna try and make something a little more restraint in the 'amount-of-tracks' department next time.

Yes, one possibility to get more transparincy is to take or fade some tracks out. But I like your mix and would rather just do some more EQ on each individial intstrument to thinner the the spectrum. Try to listen on each track carefully in which regions in eq the important frquencies for this track are. But do this while also listen to the other tracks. Because sometime a EQ-ed track sounds terrible when played in solo but greate when played in the mix with the other tracks.

You can do this like this:
Put an eq on each track right behind the instrument and set the Q-factor (bell curve) for a band to 5 for example (gain value to 12 db) and go thru the spectrum from the highest frequencies to the lowest very slowly. Listen caryfully to instrument for itself when it's sound very muddy and stop variariing the freq there. Chose a higher q-factor and correct the frequency to find the more exact value. Then lower the gain value to -6 .. -10db to get rid of the mud in the spectrum. Go thru the other frequencies with the other bands till you don't have any mud anymore in this track.

Doing this thoroughfully for each track is lot of work but you will get much more transparency at the end for beginning... :-)
