snow leopard upgrade and a confusing problem in live

Post by greg acid girls » Sun Aug 30, 2009 1:12 am

so i just upgraded to snow leopard as it didn't seem that there were too many issues being reported. but now i'm working on this remix that's due tomorrow and it keeps crashing. i've tried each of the plugins that i'm using by themselves and they all seem to work fine. i think i have narrowed it down to the fact that the stems of the song were given to me in .sd2 format, but i can't confirm. can't find any info online either. is it do with .sd2 files having a different native sample rate than the available choices? is that even the case?

Ableton Live 7.0.10
OS X 10.6
2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo
4 GB Ram

please help! time is running out.

Have you found anything on how to convert them?

No offense meant, but why on earth upgrade your OS when Ableton don't currently recommend it, and not all plug in manufacturers do either? I'm not touching it until RME and other manufacturers with audio and MIDI drivers on my system are green lighting it.

That said, if you remove all plug ins it still crashes? This means removing them from the VST/Components folder to one marked something like "Disabled VST" and "Disabled AU", this assures that it's not a plug in. I'm willing to bet it is. Different audio formats shouldn't be that affected by a new OS, but a slight change in room temperature can affect certain plug ins.

Probably best to upgrade to 7.0.16 while you're at it.

OS X 10.6.5.
Live 7 (7.0.18)
M-Audio FireWire Audiophile

Dont bother with 7.0.16 either, I cant go more than a little while without a crash, although in my case its every time I import audio. I'm doing a test run with it so I've currently got no third party plugs activated. I've had no problems with Reason or any other program on Snow Leopard thus far, unfortunately just my favourite DJing program :(

Live Support have basically said that there may well never be a specific Snow Leopard compatible version of Live 7, perhaps wait til Live 8 gets a Snow Leopard specific patch and upgrade?

Its a shame, because Snow Leopard is otherwise a pretty sweet OS...

No, actually the statment was the opposite:

2. Will Live 7 be compatible with Mac OS X 10.6?

It is likely that Live 7 will also be compatible but we can't promise it before internal tests are finished.

Time Machine if properly configured can reverse back your machine to Leopard.
Read the Time Machine Documentation. I use TM only for documents not for system files.
For that I use Super Duper.
SD is free so I'd make a copy of your machine now.

Someone mentioned on a similar thread the possibility of using Rosetta.

I've only briefly tried using Rosetta, performance was a touch sluggish, but it certainly seemed more stable. If you aren't using the program for live DJ sets or anything, that might be the ticket if/until an update comes along.

Greg, installing Rosetta (if you haven't already) should significantly improve things. However, I'd also recommend going through each clip/sample and see if you have any that are using the "complex" re-sampling option. If so, switch this to "tones" or "beats", depending on the type of clip.

For some reason, the "complex" setting makes Live very fragile in Snow Leopard. It could very well cause the problems you've mentioned. As a fix, I've found it's best just not to use it altogether.

Sorry, but the Rosetta hint does not make any sense at all, technically.

Rosetta translates old PowerPC code into x86 code for Intelmacs.

Means: only installing Rosetta does not make a differences at all and if you run Live in Rosetta you're actually running the PowerPC version of Live in an G4/G5 Emulator on your Intelmac.

I'm in an old version of 7 and was having crashing problems too with Snow Leopard. I turned off the complex mode as suggested in the forum here and it's working much better so far. Thanks guys, it will do until 7 or 8 are upgraded to fix the problem.
