Finally bought a PowerMac G4!!
Finally bought a PowerMac G4!!
Have Ableton installed, but having a few issues, reckon I should probably reinstall it (Ableton 7.something)
Mac G4 Mirroured drive doors
1.25GHz dual core
512mb ram (upgrading soon)
70gb HD (upgrading soon)
OS X 10.2.8 (probably upgrading to 10.5 soon)
Besides it being 6yrs. old and running faster than my 2yr. old Windows XP machine.. The sound out of it's stock core audio chip is AMASING!!! and it was all for $150 (monitor, mouse, keyboard, and 15in. display).

Cheers mate!
I bought it cheap because it was taking up space in the bloke's flat and he wanted to buy a Mac mini with the money.

Re: Finally bought a PowerMac G4!!
sounds like somewhat of an idea, but I'd just about break even to buy the same thing or equiv. on ebay or someplace, so with the money I saved I can buy stuff for it to make it better than the ones that cost more for what I have now.
If it was like $700 for the thing, then I'd think about it.

Congratulation!
Still 2 years ago the e6600 2.4ghz duo2core was the hot thing for pc and was probably more than 10 time faster than a last generation G4. I wonder what kind of pc you had... a 1.4ghz celeron??

If you even considered paying 700 for that, then Ive got a bridge that you might be interested in.briwest wrote:sounds like somewhat of an idea, but I'd just about break even to buy the same thing or equiv. on ebay or someplace, so with the money I saved I can buy stuff for it to make it better than the ones that cost more for what I have now.

Re: Finally bought a PowerMac G4!!
not to piss on anyone's cheerios, but how can you get anything done on a 1.25 ghz dual core? especially when that is the bare minimum to run Live according to Ableton.
System requirements
Mac: 1.25 GHz G4/G5 or faster (Intel Mac recommended), 1 GB RAM (2 GB recommended), Mac OS X 10.4.11 (10.5 or later recommended), DVD-ROM drive

Re: Finally bought a PowerMac G4!!
I wouldn't go to 10.5 - I'd only go as high as 10.4.11 - otherwise you're bogging it down with loads of useless Intel chip era stuff. 10.4.11 is good. I'm running the latest version of Live 7, the latest FireFox, no issues at all.
On a similar note, does anyone want to buy a 2004 dual 1.8 G5 with 2.5 GB RAM running, you guessed it, 10.4.11? It comes with a flat 15" Apple Cinema Display, Apple keyboard, Apple mouse, and a non-functioning SuperDrive. But hey, it's got two FireWire 400 ports, one FireWire 800 port, a bunch of USB 2.0 ports, and three availble PCI-X slots!
I need to sell it to make room for this big ass Genelec 7050B subwoofer under my desk!
