Logic User Becomes an Ableton User... a gets confused

Post by gypsymoth » Tue Sep 08, 2009 7:59 pm

Hey

I'm keen to use Ableton to put together re-edits of disco and funk tracks, like about 1000000000 other people out there. I've managed to put one together but it took a lot of hard work to re-arrange the parts in the Arrangement view. Why? Because I'm so used to Logic, I think in terms of selecting and cutting parts to create a track

Is this the right way to work within Ableton? Probably not

One thing I noticed was how difficult it is to select specific chunks of audio individually, or, select the whole lot and try to deselect one specfic chunks. For example, I wanted to add an extra four bars of drums within the track, but couldnt accurately/ easily select only the audio I wanted to move

Not sure if this is making sense, but has anyone got any tips to help me speed up the process (and if you think I'm doing it all wrong, pls say - need the help)

cheers, L

are you warping the tracks first (matching them to their own tempo grid)? if not, that definitely should be your first step. once you have them all warped, you can do all your cutting and pasting on the grid. session view is best for this type of editing, but its perfectly do-able in arrange view 'the old fashioned way'.

You can select a portion of the audio clip in arrange and hit CTRL+E to cut that portion. Also clicking under the waveform on the grid and hitting CTRL+E splits the file on that point. You can SHIFT+click multiple audio parts and hit or CTRL+J to consolidate them(stick them back together). The consolidated files will be normalized, with their clip volumes adjusted to play back at the same volume as heard prior to consolidation. Also, the new files will be created at the sample rate and bit depth set in Live’s Preferences window, which may differ from those in the original audio files. CTRL+4 deactivates the grid so that you can select audio parts without snapping.

Yeah you need to get used to how the clips work with selecting. When expanded so you can see the waves, clicking the solid bar above the clip selects the whole thing, while clicking in the wave will just place the cursor or allow you to drag and select a range. After selecting a range, you can then click and drag from the bar and it will automatically chop it at the end of the range. It's really cool once you get the workflow down and I can do things a million times faster than I can in other DAW's im good with.

Also, remember you can jump down to the editor pane and make loop edits and modifictions there too. It will only affect what you currently have selected in arrangement too. If you end up chopping and then modifying one of the chops, the other original pieces will still have the original properties, and you can drag them back out to original lengths if you want. It's really advanced work-flow wise compared to some of the klunky ass DAW's they have.

If you want to move stuff with the mouse or select the whole thing, use the bar and if you want to slip-select, click the wave. I don't really spend too much time reading documentation. I'm more of a go play around and learn new stuff out kinda guy, but when I do jump in the manual because I can't figure something out, it's really well written and thorough.

I actually really started to like Logic years back and was about to buy it, but Apple bought them so I had to let go. I know how good the workflow was in Logic back then and I'm sure its ridiculous now if they even just stayed at a consistent pace. I can tell you when I got into Live a little bit, I can barely use anything else and be happy.

command 1 & 2 , are extra handy for changing the grid resolution - / + , when arranging.
