Dual Monitor Support
Dual Monitor Support
I know this has been posted many times before, and many of us thought it was coming in Live 8 but alas no.
Can anyone at Ableton let us know if this feature will ever be available?
Everyone I know with a serious Ableton driven set up has more than one monitor!!!!!

Re: Dual Monitor Support
Do you mean setting the master track to play on 2 pairs of monitors ? You can use the cue/headphones output for that, can't you ?

+1
This is an old one. It's possible they are working on this already.

Nope, my guess is no matter how many people would like the option to tear off the piano roll editor, or to see both Session and Arrangement view at the same time, Ableton aren't going to do it. Been with Ableton since 3, and people have requested this at least since 4 came out.Soma wrote:+1

Re: Dual Monitor Support
Don't get me wrong; I appreciated the one-screen solution hugely when I started out, and I think its important it still has that function. But the option to go to two screen as you move up in skill would be nice. Would it really be that hard to do? I know nothing about software engineering so I cant criticize to much.
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure.
Re: Dual Monitor Support
The point being that (I think) all the other options Sonar, Cubase, Reason etc offer this facility.

The founder of Ableton hates floating windows. Hates the Photoshop approach to interface design, to the point to where even two screens seems to be too much to him.joewalch wrote:The point being that (I think) all the other options Sonar, Cubase, Reason etc offer this facility.

I don't like the floating windows either.. At least the way that my design teaachers use them.. You watch a demo on a projecter and they're movin' pallettes out of the way to get to parts of the file, and then closing pallettes just to reopen them.Machinesworking wrote:The founder of Ableton hates floating windows. I like being able to figure out what pallettes I need, float them around to where I want them, and then snap them into place.. So their floating in the sense that I can move them around and such, but once I get them where I want them they stay put..
I also like the tabs in CS4.. Could you imagine (and this is pretty far off) opening up several tabs, and switching between livesets that way!? You'd have everything loaded up, which isn't so ideal in this day and age.. but look ahead at what might be possible.

Logic and Digital Performer both have screen sets, I believe Cubase also offers this? In Logic moving to a different screen set is super fast, no reason to have multiple windows open, or constantly be mousing/resizing sub-windows like I do in Live.
DP allows for multiple songs in a single set. if you maintain your resources right, you can access multiple soft synths to play live etc.I also like the tabs in CS4.. To a degree you can do this in Live, but there's no real easy way to turn off and on multiple instances of plug ins within live.
To a degree, I get it, Live can't be everything to everybody, but at least this last one I would love to see them clear up a bit. Kore from NI is a great add on if you want to have a large performance with dozens of audio tracks and switch between different soft synths dynamically during a performance. I even have a set in Live where program changes sent to Kore change the synth I'm playing so I don't have to try to while using both hands to play a part. In Live alone the only way to do this is to set up a Rack with a knob, and turn a knob to change sounds, which doesn't necessarily turn off that sounds resources. You can do this in the Arrangment page, but in Kore you can set a single button to capture the tracks in kore, so muted tracks don't take resources, and you can have dozens of synths available to you during a live set this way. With live a single button is always an on/off scenario, so there's really no way to set up more than two soft synths to switch between were you turn off the plug in and save resources, unless you set it up in the arrangement page.... which isn't really 'live' then, not like pushing a single button on a controller to switch presets.
Anyway, YES Live should be able to use two monitors for more than third party plug ins, but so far the anti screen set, anti floating windows mind set is firm.
