If a label on Beatport goes under?..

Post by lunabass » Thu Sep 10, 2009 9:27 am

if a label doesn't sell enough units on beatport and beatport removes the label from their site for example, does that mean the tracks you've signed to that label will disappear from beatport also?

has this happened to anyone here?

Yes, the tracks definitely get removed with the label. - I speak from my own experience, but don't care. :D

I don't know in details, but it seems like it has to do with sale amounts and release frequency of the label.

ah right, so you have sales targets to meet. and presumably as a tune gets old and sells less you need to release more tunes to keep the labels sales figures up at an acceptable standard?

I am too lazy to search, but someone actually posted that part of Beatport's contract on here at one point.

Can't remember, something like making a minimum of $500 gross per quarter or something similar.

Of course, they will disappear. The tracks are released on the label.

$500 gross per quarter is correct. They used to have a probationary period of a year (and the gross was $300), but I'm not sure if they do that anymore.

Of course, all my tracks that were removed from Beatport are still on JunoDownload, DJdownload, MOS/Mixmag, Amazon, etc.... Don't let Beatport be the sole gatekeeper of electronic music!

I think this is a good thing.

It's way easy for anybody to create a label.

It thins down the clusterfuck that is beatport.

Elitist DJs can still claim "limited pressing" if they got the track before it went bye bye.

Turning this around - does anyone actually find beatport to be a useful outlet?
Nothing to see here - move along!

It's the iTunes of Electronica, love or hate either, they get the largest amounts of traffic and there is some status associated.

Agreed.

That said, I shop there, but also Boomkat (the most), and Juno.

It's tough that no single site seems to carry all the records I am looking for - it's a little too much like real record stores :)
