Folks,
Im a producer. ableton dj and run a label - Forbidden Fruit Recordings. Im keen to support ableton djs who want to get creative by maing the stems for releases available on request to those that buy the full ep or for a small charge (price of one track or little more) for those who buy less than full.
I think this will be the future for many in time and we want to nurture that creativity
We are looking to do this for our next release - Dark Room Robot - Samsara. a deep tech tune. out 28th sept. and all subsequent releases
I'm keen to hear people views while we pull this together...
let the views roll

Some folks are doing this already, but sometimes half the vibe of a track is the way the stems are mixed together for the final mix.
i.e. What if the artist sidechains the bassline or drums etc, would you include the rendered sidechain effect? If you do it gets ugly trying to do timestretching, if you don't then it could lose the whole original vibe. Same with delay based effects on tracks. Basically, how are you going to present the stems?

artist discretion.
if i was running a label in this way and I released a track. I would bundle the track and the parts that I would use to proform it live. the cosm way. so that when they all go back together they sound just like the original track.
or if it is in support of ableton and the future I think the track should be bundled with clips.
does ableton live have a rich text type format that clip made in the cutting edge version can be used in previous versions.
im very into these posibilities. hoping that in the future when we buy a track we get 6-8 parts.

Depends on what you want to support: Complete remixes from the stems (ie most of the original stems without heavy processing), or basically jus a more flexible option for those could find a small number (probably 4 to 6 or so fully processed) of stems useful for Djing.
Its becomming incresasingly common to find tracks that are released with an instrumental and accapella included as well and I have comes across the occasional release with a small number of 'DJ friendly' processed stems.
Its kind of a double edged sword, on the one hand yo are making your music more accessable and useful to a broader group of DJs, on the other hand you are making it accessable to lots of remixers too which may or may not be what you want.

Nothing to see here - move along!

cheers for your thoughts guys...
the stems will be able to assembled back into the complete track, is the initial intention, from how i and people i know use ableton. so you would have
drums
bass
percussion
lead
efx
obviously theyre may be some cross over with these broad categories and variations depending on how the tune works.
I'm not saying were going to get it right first time but i image that this will be evolving as the art and use of the stems evolves along with demand. Initially im just keen to get the ball rolling really
To answer the question of side chaining, those effexct would still be present in say the bass even though you wouldnt have the drums, so everything would go back as was.
not sure on the rich text on clips, im still exploring live 8 at the mo and havent fully got my dj set up working in it as ive been setting up on a new pc. our next release isnt until 26th of sept so a little time to tweak things ;p
is this something either you guys would be interested in ?
