Just got APC40 but no "red box" or automap...

Just got an APC40 from a friend, barely used, and I can't figure out how to get that red box to appear. From what I read in the manual and online you should be able to plug it in and go, right? I've just purchased the Live8 suite and I've tried every possible combination in the preferences to get it to work but no luck. Yes I'm a noob and I'm sure it's something simple, has anyone ran into this problem or know what I need to do to make it work? There's no automap at all, and I don't mind custom mapping it myself, but being able to jump to large banks of clips with that box and have the knobs already mapped to whatever I throw into a project would be nice. Thanks a bunch : )

under Control Surfaces select the APC40 and that's it.
