if you look at early hiphop they pretty much raped every loop they could... it was really a matter of time that someone sampled X and someone else sampled Y untill theres not much left to sample

sure it worked then...but how long can sample relient beats go on for?

True, but back then what did people have?? Turn tables and their parents records. Yeah you could record to casette. That was the big deal then - Hi-tech. If you wanted to make music from thin air that was a close to it as a bunch of broke kids in Brooklyn (or where ever) could come. it wasn't like they were gonna all get guitars, and drums for their birthday or Christmas, but a record player... there's already on in the house... you can scratch and run the beat back... control

it was the begining of something bigger than the hip hop haters are giving it credit for.



What exactly were house, jungle, ragga, blah blah DJs doing in the 90's and beyond?
I mean besides not making as much money for their loop "digging".

nah it was definitely great for the times

but i don't think just dropping a 4 bar loop on a drumbeat is that interesting anymore when the technology allows for far greater things...still within the lines of flipping the sample with just an mpc or whatever

just ask timbaland...hes moved on to 96 bar loops

I think they bite b/c they know that people latch on to familiarity, in fact, part of hip-hop culture is built on familiarity. People today are still reinventing some of the same samples and breaks.

Just asking, anyway, took it OT.

As for sampling, loop away on anything not obvious if you aren't gonna sell 50,000+ units, you will probably be fine.

PS: That said, I have been sued for a tiny indie release. I would still roll the dice anyway. The amount I settled for was still far less than what it would have cost in time and money had I done it legit and in advance.

The Stones didn't get any of the money from the Verve, they lost their rights to their early songs when former manager Allen Klein's ABKCO company stiffed them in the early 70s (allegedly). Satisfaction, Jumping Jack Flash, Gimme Shelter etc, all royalties go to ABKCO. ABKCO have since sued rapper 'Lil Wayne.

Keith Richards calls the episode on the publishing deal with Allen Klein and losing out on millions over the years as 'the cost of an education'. At least they made up for it somewhat with Some Girls, their biggest selling album with 'Miss You' and 'Beast of Burden' etc. and everything since being their royalties.

Still, that song put The Verve on the map, and led to them selling a bucketload of their album 'Urban Hymns', so it didn't exactly put them in the poor house, especially as the album went platinum UK and Stateside and they had another #1 hit with 'The Drugs Don't Work'.

of course you call it respect because you like the artist. every rapper bites, but most just 'borrow' a line, cause it works, or it's a direct shout out. to bite is to acknowledge the 'original' spitter's rhyme/etc., in an almost paternal fashion, i.e. showing respect for your elders. when done right it's fuckin fresh... but the muther fuckers who straight up jack someone's shit, and pass it off as their own?!? <insert infinite rolly eye smiley>

most hip hop features samples... <shrugs shoulders> just a ghetto version of a cover i guess, lol. you like it or not. i like flipping samples, and i like to make my own tunes. both are fun, and satisfy my musical hunger...
