Sound card suggestion for DJing with Ableton

Post by Oblivius » Wed Sep 16, 2009 9:00 am

I read through quite a lot of other similar topics, but didn't really come to any final conclusion, so I decided to make a new topic.

What I am looking for is a external soundcard with a minimum of 2 outputs. Inputs such as mic pre-amp aren't that important, all my music is coming from the computer itself (so straight through the firewire/usb if I have understood correctly. I currently perform both dj sets and live-PA sets, using Ableton and my APC40. I'm in the process of purchasing a new Mac PowerBook for live performances, but it would also be nice if the sound card worked with my Windows computer which I have at home. Basically two outs would be enough since it would allow me to use one for queing and one just for the master out. For the Live-PA sets I could do with only one output really.

From what I found out in the other topics, the Duet looked like a good alternative, but I would prefer something in a bit more modest price range. The Duet is selling for approx. 430 euros at Thomann.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have the NI audio 2 DJ, works fine for me :)
Some stuff, and some other stuff. Honest.
Currently on a huge and mostly pointless promotion drive, come play:

I am using the M-Audio Fast Track Pro for my laptop and it works very well by itself. However, I find the output volume is somewhat low compared to CDJs or Turntables.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just realized that the Duet won't really work for me since it only works with OS X, no Windows support (which I partially need, at the moment at least).

Duet wont work for DJ anyway. Indigo express is the best for size and latency (almost like RME, 0.3 ms and that on lame Vista!) but currently only 17` MBP has the slot, though I expect and hope that just like FW, Apple will bring back the express to other models. Otherwise any of NI USB cards- the best sound / price. TC konnekt 6 are dirt cheap now, great sound, might seem bit bulky but the top concept works great for DJing, perhaps the best (I did some DJ gigs with it before upgrading to 24D, the cue/volume control was the best of all cards ever used, just the way you want it on stage)

Maybe it is only me, but I just can't trust 1/8" plugs.

anything with multiply outs and dsp.
Live 8 Sweet, APC40, GR-20, livecontrol, PCR-300, Torq Xponent, Parker NiteFly, Logic, other assorted fun Softies plus quasi penchant for Mumbo Sauce and ability to get yuppies furiously heated within minutes.
