RME snap crackle POP suggestions?

Hi all
I noticed on this thread that some of you seem to have RME products, so I'll give it a go and respectfully ask for some advice/insight, if I could. I run Ableton Live 4.1 on WinXP with a RME Hammerfall 9632 card, and I have been having issues getting rid of crackle noises during playback and clip auditions in Live from day one. I have scrutinized what seems obvious (RME not preferred audio device, upgraded 2.82 drivers, 150 Flash, performance set for background services) but I get crackle at any and all latency buffer sizes. I don't know how to increase the hard disk cache or enable "busmaster mode" in XP, or set the latency timer in the BIOS, as per what the manual suggests to remedy this problem. Also, how can you tell if you have a "closed loop"? any info on this matter will be put to good use, you can be sure.

A while back specfic motherboard and processor combinations were suggested as possible sources of audio card conflicts.
I,m running a mac so i havent got great depth or experience on this subject but go hear and do a search www.nuendo.com both mac and pc user forum.

In case anyone was browsing this thread and was interested, I can offer up some advice how I fixed the "crackles" on a HDSP 9632... I uninstalled Creative Audigy 2 drivers/mediasource files and pulled the Audigy 2 PCI (which was the preferred audio device in XP btw), and alakazaam; down to a comfortable 5ms in/5ms out effective latency in Live 4.1 with pristine results, and I have not even tried to go lower yet! I even re-enabled the onboard audio (AC'97) so I could set something other than the RME for the primary device, which is what RME recommends. No problem. This is going to be fun...

i just fixed a similar problem with my digi 96/8. It had to do with the sharing of irq's. I simply had to have it in the right PCI slot in the motherboard and updated my motherboard chipset drivers and all was well. Hope that is of some help.

P.s. what motherboard?

I am currently running a Gigabyte K8NNXP w/ AMD 64 3200+. It is not generally as highly regarded as the VIA chipset boards (nforce3 150), but it is solid and nimble. I feel like I'm in the future, regarding how fast everything just works for this system. SATA OS drive helps A LOT. Do you have a Gigabyte board as well, perhaps? No PCI IRQ routing support in my BIOS.

The Pci slot issue has also applied to Macs in the past where the card had to situated in number 3 slot. That was for a korg 12/12 card Bw G3 under OS9 and 8. There may be something in this for your problem

no i dont have a gigabyte board, i use an asus A7N8X, on my board the good slots are 2 and 4, I have no idea what slots are not shared but you may find some help of the manual of your botherboard.
