Getting Started with the Max for Live Beta

Post by Dennis DeSantis » Tue Sep 01, 2009 2:02 pm

Welcome to the Max for Live beta.

Note: Max for Live is still in beta. This means that features are not yet final, and there are still a number of known (and unknown) bugs. We strongly recommend backing up any important documents before attempting to use them with Max for Live. We don't recommend using beta software for critical production or performance work.

To get started, you will need to download, install and authorize the applications:
To do so, please check that article on our website: http://www.ableton.com/maxforlive/beta

For more information on reporting bugs and crashes, please see the “How to Report a Bug” Lesson in Live's Help View.

Enjoy Max for Live,
Your Ableton and Cycling '74 Teams

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but others might have the same problem. I got a 'welcome to the beta' email this morning, and when I click through to download the Max beta, I get a 'sorry, but <my email> does not have access to that file' message. Live has a different way of downloading the M4L beta, and I can download that without a problem. Is there someone I can contact about this?

Thanks

Brad

Hi bdc,

Yes, this is an issue with the latest round of beta invites, and affects about 30 new testers.

This should be resolved later today.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Best,
Dennis DeSantis

Hi folks,

All testers should now be able to download the Max betas from Cycling.

Please let us know (via [email protected]) if you're still having issues with download or authorization.

Thanks,
Dennis DeSantis

Hi,

thanks for adding me, I'm looking forward to testing it out!

I've tried downloading Max 5.1 (for Mac) twice now, but both times the download fails after approx 60 Mb with the following error:

Download Error

/Users/lossius/Desktop/Inbox/Max5_39951(2).dgm.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

I'm on a ADSL broadband connection, but it's not blazing fast, and the download has been running for approx. 10 minutes when it fails.

Thanks!

Just thought I'd let you know that the download worked for me, but I've got a high speed connection.

Cheers.

Hi all,

I've just joined the Beta group - first thing, Hello! :-) Second thing, is there a document somewhere that summarises expected behavioural differences between 'normal' Max & M4L? Lastly, I was going to bone up on what's been going on that I've missed by reading the forum back-history but it seems that I can only see a few weeks of posts - is this governed by an option I'm dumb and being unable to find, and if not, is there an archive I can catch up with?

Looking forward to some long evenings getting intimate with M4L!

i may be wrong, but I think that prior to the extent of the forum activity which you see, that the testing group was very small and functioning via an email listserve only

Looking forward to testing. As I have not yet viewed the forum topics, this might be a question that has been answered or a thread already in play, but ...

Will I be able to use M4L with the APC?

thanks!

Download speed for the max installers are terrible for me. It's definitely on the server end because everything else downloads blazing fast.

From Cycling's server the DL starts out fast but then dies after a few minutes and eventually times out after a couple of hours.

i'm trying to learn max for live, i don't currently own Max. when i try to use use the max, msp or jitter tutorials i can see the background of the patch, but when i change it to performance mode the patch is blank. is this normal?

max for live plugins work in live. i have that setup.

can i only use max for live patches or can i use regular max/msp patches to assist my learning in Max / MSP?

Well, there isn't really a thing called "performance mode," so there are several possibilties:

1. You're doing the included Max for Live "Lessons," right? Start with those. They should sort you right out.

2. Every Max for Live device (audio/instrument/MIDI effect) starts by dragging a template patch from the Live File Browser onto the device rack for a track. When you do that, you'll definitely see something. Is that the problem?

3. Is it possible that you're hitting the "Presentation" button (the button that looks like an easel in the Max window's toolbar)? If so, thing will definitely go blank because there are no objects added to the presentation layer. That's got nothing to do with performance - you use it to create interfaces (When you've got a Max window open for editing, Choose "Max Help" from the Help menu and type "Presentation Mode" into the search bar. That should help explain things a bit).

If that's not it, then the usual bug reporting applies: What kind of machine are you on? What OS version? What beta version of Live? Max? And what *exactly* did you do to make that blank thing happen?
