an internet tantrum

Post by danzel » Fri Sep 18, 2009 12:03 pm

everything chord or melody i play at the minute just pisses me right off, i've deleted every track i have started for weeks now because it all sounds like a piss poor rip off of something else.
Any time i try and and make synth patches i seem to just disappear up my own arse and nothing gets done!
i think there is always a balance between joy and frustration with this stuff but i'm getting nothing at the minute.

I know the feeling. I'm trying to get out of mindset that I have to sit down and do something good, and just enjoy messing around again. If something good comes out of it, then great. Not easy to force myself to think like that though.

I'm sure someone must have some good tips for getting out of a rut.

you need to refresh your musical senses.

try learning about something in a completely direction direction. for example, if you're making techno - flip over and listen to beethoven, trying to understand the structure of his pieces. or, if you're making ambient - study some beat based music, and drum it on your table.

trick your brain out of the dead circle. give it more options to piece together

maybe so andydes, this is a hell of a rut.. i've been making electronic music for about 4 years and seriously think that my best tracks were made at about the 1 year mark.. seriously considering just focussing on playing my bass..
i think part of the problem is trying to force kind of standard structures into my tracks, i'm not very good at the minimal approach.

if it "all sounds like everyone else" and you are "not very good at minimal" and you feel like "focusing on your bass".
I think the answer is in the question.

IE: Make complex bass tweaking music with arcane structure.

If your lizard brain wants to do something else you are foolish to try and logic it into submission
the rational mind is actually less potent than the primitive mind, but it has a superiority complex and talks too much ;)
