my guess is that it'll be for sale by the end of the year.

/speculation.
And I predict that there won't be a Live 9 release for awhile because of this and I think everybody is fine with that.

They'll probably even kick back for awhile and see what people come up with in M4L before deciding what they will add in 9, or maybe while we're all distracted with it they'll work on all those unsexy "I can't believe Live can't do this yet!/every other DAW can!" features people have been whining about.

I dunno, it's not like everyone at Ableton is working on max4Live and there's nothing to fix in Live 8.

I don't know any company that just kicks back for a while.

Max 5 was released in April 2008.

But I think your conclusion is correct.

Yeah but do you really think there's yet another group programming for Live 9 right now for a Q1 2009 release? I bet that's the farthest thing from their mind.

Between 8 and M4L I think they should take a well deserved year break from another major release and just iron out the kinks in 8 and M4L. It would also give our pocket books a break.

of course. there's probably a guy that does nothing but go over old releases, he'll get help every now and then. there's some guys that have been working on new shit that didn't get into Live 8 and there's probably a few guys off doing shit nobody understands but will get into a release sooner or later. then a few working with Serato, a handful with max4Live. even with that rough rundown, that's only a dozen or so programmers.
right now for a Q1 2009 release?
not a Q1 release, sometime later next year. every company has a 5+ year plan, I'm sure Gerhard has an idea in the back of his mind when Live 10 will be out, gotta keep moving or you go out of business.

do you take breaks at work after you finish a project? I don't and can't, I move onto the next project.

our pocket books? when was the last time you sent Ableton money?? ;)

i agree, my wallet needs a break. also i think the pace at which developers are rolling out new features is a bit too aggressive. i guess there is always the choice to not upgrade, but it is too exciting for me not to:(

Let me rephrase that (actually I think I made my point but I'll do it again). I don't mean stop working altogether for 6 months and just spend 40 a week looking at all the retarded M4L devices people are making.

I've only been using Live since 5 but to the best of my knowledge each year they've just released an improved DAW with some new effects or instruments or some shit. M4L is a pretty big add-on and separate release. Then you also mentioned the Serato collab I totally forgot about. Their plate is probably the fullest it's ever been and so will ours be. There's no need to crank out 9 in the time honored yearly cycle. Also it seems like 8 is taking a lot longer to debug than past releases.

But if they do shove 9 into the market soon there's going to be some serious WTFing going on around here in regard to the expense of having all things currently Ableton. We already get a lot of that with just the DAW upgrade each year.

I didn't say in a year, I said sometime next year, maybe even 2011 but I'm sure it's on the books. you have to understand that companies have long term plans, it's amateurish to not have a long term plan.

did you notice the sticky and video on the top of the page where Ableton is asking for software engineers to come work with them? they're most certainly not looking to take a break.

their plate is full and the user base is blowing up. they're going to take the new income and re-invest it in themselves. right now would be a bad time to ease up, keep pushing!

FFS Live 8 is stable. you're not even using 8, I can't take your word on that, c'mon man... read this closely, I keep posting this but people aren't getting it. MORE USERS MEANS MORE PEOPLE ON THE FORUM WHICH MEANS MORE COMPLAINTS. people with good experiences with Live aren't going to make threads on their positive experience, they're certainly not going to go on and on about it like the people that got the shaft.

you don't work in software development, where are you getting these views on how the business works? don't you think I've seen this before in my own work? I've been doing this a while.

speculate all you want, I don't know what you're basing your opinions on.

2011 would be great for a 9 release. I wasn't saying they shouldn't release another major upgrade ever.

More programmers would be great but I hope that's also towards making things stable quicker. More users also means more computer configurations to fuck up. Toss in more new controllers to fuck up too.

I agree more users means more complainers but that's offset by plenty of long time users and members of this forum complaining about it being unstable too. I'm sure you've seen the multiple "this is the most unstable Live version to date" posts. Those aren't from noobs.

I hope it is fine now, will be getting it this weekend.

I'm sure in the long run we're both totally wrong. was it Yamaha that were rumored to be buying Ableton?

do try the beta of Live 8, you never know. congrats on Live 8, new toys!!!

the day I start a "Live XXX is unstable, this sucks" will be a great day for many people. my keyboard will burst into flames with the LOLs and flames.
