Friend says i cant run Ableton FX through MIDI Live

1980s Proteus Rack mount somethin. and friend says no fx will work through Live with?
He has P Tools 6.9.2 an says the same with also. Please tell me somethin

You mean apply effects to external gear ?
This works only if you route the audio from the external gear into live, and put effects on that audio channel...
But beware of some noticable latency.

As simple u state, Ive said the same to my friend, except not as clear.
He has Pro Tools 6.9.2 and a version of same age dated Logic on his MacBook Pro.
He is adamant in not using any of said above with him playing on stage.
Eventhough he is steadfast in using all those programs as producer.
Furthermore, he does not want to use his laptop for jamming or stage work we are doing.
When jamming an playing shows he has old Proteus Rack MIDI into Edirol board and KORG KAOSS and KORG Electribe. As drummer I am tired of old sounds and yet hes still fond of.
I have Live on my comp have brought to studio but he no want to fuck w/ Live at all cause his misunderstood conception of......
He thinks Live and Pro tools cannot be used in live sense - but those two programs have desired plug-ins an FX.
