I love Madlib but I have one question: How does he get away with his use of sampling? It's not like he's taking the tiniest samples and chopping them up so they are unrecognizable. Does he pay for them?

AFAIK he just gets the rights. or in some cases gets "commissioned" by a record label (blue note!) to remix anything in their catalog. this seems like a mixtape, which is a whole different thing.

he also has a few projects with real live musicians. . also a nice approach 8)
