Italian Dj fined for using MP3's

pretty hefty fine! by all accounts the italians have disco police (for want of a better name

) who go to clubs and demand djs prove, on the spot, that the music they have on cdr's and laptops is music they own legally.

sounds pretty impossible if you ask me.

Proof is easy - stick a photocopy of your (Beatport, whatever) credit card transactions in your gig bag; or they can borrow my mobile and call the guys who wrote the tracks.

Besides - surely they can''t demand proof on the spot? Prove you own your pants?!

Pirating music is one thing - using that music to make a living is another. Same goes for software.

what about promo copies? what about having bootleg/edit version on 12" vinyl? (f.e. the theo parrish stuff re-edits etc)

do you have to take a whole administration for all your purchases with you?

1.4 milion euro / 2000 MP3's = 700 euro for each MP3!!!! are they kidding?

Makes people think twice about stealing music though doesn't it? Can only be a good thing.

As long as they don't clamp down on online DJ mixes...

as long as unlicensed dj mixes aren't sold i think most producers dont care, it's only promotion for them and they don't miss potential income from it...

i got fined for copyright violation but it was only £500 & i never paid it .
it was for a mix i used to promote myself & some tracks came from soulseek .
the whole thing is so stupid ,why they don t fine the guy who give the file away .
if i give a pair of trousers to someone, he wont be arrested because he didn t pay for it .

i think the copyright mafia & the anti disco conspirators are a big bunch of cunts .
honestly ,dont they make enough money???

it's not the artist/producer/label that enforces this it's bodies like the RIAA.

they don't view it as promotion, just IP theft

this isn't that ridiculous. if you're making a living off music, there is NO excuse not to buy it. especially since you should be able to write off the purchase as a business expense (though i dunno about tax law in Italy or Europe).

as far as i'm concerned, if he's into the music and the scene AND making money from it, then he should be supporting it, not leeching from it.
most local record shops that specialise in club music are run by little companies who are often as not, local djs themselves trying to make a living out of what they know best, so this sort of thing only takes money from them, not just the record labels and artists.

the thing i found crazy was the disco police matter, as some one said, how do you prove it? offer them round for a night cap afterwards to check your record collection????!?!?

but 1.4 million?! man, he is screwed!
